    Jason Juno|Mar 25, 2015

HURLEY - With all the success the Hurley football program has had, it's hard to find many firsts. But senior Jordan Moore (5-10, 265) will be the first Midget to play in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association/Children's Hospital Small School All-Star Football Game at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh, Wis., on July 18 at 2 p.m. "It's just a great honor to be representing Hurley," Moore said. • Borseth brings UW-Green Bay dancing again

    Pat Krause|Mar 18, 2015

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Like many basketball fans, this is Bessemer native Kevin Borseth's favorite time of the year. That's because the NCAA Basketball Tournaments are getting underway. But Borseth doesn't just watch the games. He is lucky enough, and good enough, to participate in them as the head coach of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's women's basketball team. After posting a 27-4 overall record and winning its 17th-consecutive Horizon League regular season title, this past Sunday the Phoenix...

  • Devil of a defeat

    Jason Juno|Mar 17, 2015

MARQUETTE - Ironwood didn't have an answer for Iron Mountain's physical presence inside and the Red Devils' season ended in a 72-52 loss in Monday's Class C regional semifinal. The Moutaineers, 21-2 and ranked second in the final U.P. Class ABC poll of the season, started fast, leading 17-4 going into the second quarter. The Devils made three straight 3s to start the second and pull within 17-13, but Iron Mountain scored the next 15 points to thwart Ironwood's comeback effort. The Red Devils sea...

  • Devils hope to climb past Mountaineers in today's regional semi

    Pat Krause|Mar 16, 2015

IRONWOOD — When the Ironwood Red Devils defeated Calumet last week in the MHSAA Class C District 96 title game, it was the first time Ironwood had won back-to-back district tournaments since 1993 and 1994. The last one came 21 years ago and Red Devil coach Pete Lewinski was in his first two years of coaching varsity basketball in Ironwood. “The (team) records favored us and I thought we were a little tense in the first game,” Lewinski said. “We played not to lose. In the second game, we played much better and (Jake) DiGiorgio took over in the...

  • Trojans slow down Speedboys for district title

    Pat Krause|Mar 14, 2015

WAKEFIELD - Crystal Falls Forest Park has such big, strong, athletic teams that have played in so many pressure-packed football and basketball games, you must bring your A game when playing the Trojans to have any chance to win. That was especially true in Friday's MHSAA Class D District 127 tournament title game at Cardinal Gym, where the Bessemer Speedboys fell to Forest Park 75-42. "I'd give us an A for effort and a D minus for our shooting," Bessemer coach Jim Partanen said. "Overall, I'd sa...

    Jason Juno|Mar 11, 2015

KINGSFORD - Ontonagon showed it could compete with Crystal Falls Forest Park in the second half of Tuesday's MHSAA Class D regional semifinal. But it was too late by then. The Trojans jumped to a 29-5 halftime lead, taking advantage of an Ontonagon scoring drought that lasted approximately 10 minutes. Forest Park picked up a 50-28 win to advance to the regional final against Munising back in Kingsford Thursday. Munising beat Bark River-Harris 48-45 in Tuesday's nightcap. Tuesday just wasn't...

    Jason Juno|Mar 10, 2015

IRONWOOD - L'Anse didn't have much of an answer for Ironwood inside, but with the 3-point shot falling, the Purple Hornets were able to give the much taller Red Devils a scare. Ironwood survived, thanks in part to shooting 16 of 20 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, for a 58-48 victory Monday in a MHSAA Class C District 96 semifinal. "I thought we were rusty," said coach Pete Lewinski, whose Devils hadn't played since a Feb. 24 win over Wakefield-Marenisco. "Maybe their fine play had...

  • Cardinals hold off Nimrods

    Pat Krause|Mar 10, 2015

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco came from behind to defeat Watersmeet 56-53 in a first round game of the MHSAA Class D District 127 Tournament on Monday night. Not very often does a freshman move up from the junior varsity to the varsity for the district tournament and not only play well but become a difference-maker in the game. In trying not to make too much of a big deal over one game, but fans in the Cardinal Gym were shocked by Jacob Suzik's performance. Watersmeet took a 24-21 lead by...

They overcame early injuries to Mitchell Maki and Jake Tenlen and went from that 0-5 start to a second-place finish in the Indianhead Conference's East Division and then to Saturday's trophy...

    Pat Krause|Mar 7, 2015

WATERSMEET - The Crystal Falls Forest Park Trojans captured the MHSAA Class D District 127 championship with a 56-43 victory over Wakefield-Marenisco in Nimrod Nation on Friday night. It was the fifth district title in a row for Forest Park. "We had to build a program and it took years to build," CFFP coach Jackie Guiliani said. "It's a tradition now and the girls want to be part of it. We talk to the girls a lot about being physically and mentally tough in the tournament and you have to play...

What a way for the final PMC championship to be decided, with a title game between 4-1 teams. The Speedboys just took the drama out of it with a dominating performance. "This was for our seniors, our last home...

    Jason Juno|Mar 5, 2015

Forest Park had the lead by the end of the first quarter and went on to win 64-35 in Wednesday's MHSAA Class D District 127 semifinal at Nimrod Nation. Forest Park plays Wakefield-Marenisco (19-3) Friday in the district final at 6 p.m. in Watersmeet. Baldwin scored all 11 of Watersmeet's first-quarter points as the Nimrods forced...

    Pat Krause|Mar 2, 2015

IRONWOOD - The Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons had high hopes and aspirations for the NJCAA Division II Region 13 tournament, so it was a bitter pill to swallow when they fell to Dakota College of Bottineau 91-82 in the championship game at the Lindquist Center on Sunday afternoon. "It's a tough loss, especially for the sophomores," Gogebic coach Mark Movrich said. "Five months together and all of a sudden-boom-it's over. • Red Devils finish with big win at W-M

    Pat Krause|Feb 25, 2015

WAKEFIELD - After a sluggish first seven minutes, the Ironwood Red Devils played with a sense of urgency and blitzed Wakefield-Marenisco 69-35 in the final Indianhead Conference game for both teams on Tuesday night. "We didn't practice well yesterday and we didn't play well in the first seven minutes," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. "I wasn't happy. With one minute left, the light went on. We started to get the ball inside to Jake DiGiorgio and his scoring opened things up for Sharrow on...

HURLEY - Defense helped Hurley win a share of an Indianhead Conference East Division championship. Now the Midgettes are hoping it brings them a regional trophy. The Midgettes (17-5) gave up 50 or more points just twice this season on their way to a 10th straight Indianhead title – they've taken the East Division title all four years since the conference split into divisions. Now they are looking for their first regional title since 2012. "The next (goal) on our list is winning a regional," Hurl...
