  • Devils drop first game of season

    Apr 15, 2015

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Ironwood started off the soccer season with a 2-1 loss to perennial Northern Lights Conference power Three Lakes Tuesday. Ironwood coach Don Cvengros thought his Red Devils were in trouble going into the game. With spring break, they haven't practiced at all yet. Thirteen of the 18 girls were available to play Tuesday and a half dozen are new to the game. The ball was in the Bluejays' end much of the warm and sunny evening, but Ironwood played solid defense and made it a game. "They controlled the action; our defense p...

  • Midgettes start season with 11-0 win

    Jason Juno|Apr 14, 2015

ASHLAND, Wis. - Hurley didn't strike out. It didn't allow any walks. And its defense was solid. Not bad for its first game of the year. The Midgettes blanked Ashland 11-0 in five innings Monday at Northland College. Gabby Pecotte pitched all five walk-free and run-free innings for Hurley. Everyone in the Hurley order reached base and it didn't allow Ashland to take advantage of two errors. "I'm happy overall with the first game," Hurley manager Jim Kivisto said. Unlike the last two years, the...

  • Spieth captures Masters victory for the ages

    Associated Press|Apr 13, 2015

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Jordan Spieth tapped in his final putt to cap off a record performance and bent over in relief. He just as easily could have been taking a bow. This was a Masters for the ages. Not since Tiger Woods in 1997 has a 21-year-old faced so little stress while making a mockery of par in a major. Not since Raymond Floyd in 1976 has anyone withstood the pressure of leading for all four rounds at Augusta National. Only one other Masters champion - Craig Wood in 1941 - has never let anyone...

  • Mariani takes over golf operations at Gogebic Country Club

    Pat Krause|Apr 10, 2015

IRONWOOD – Gary Mariani was recently named the new Manager of Golf Operations at the Gogebic Country Club after golf pro Tyler Leskela resigned to pursue employment opportunities out of the area. “We thank Tyler for giving us 3 to 4 good years, but he was ready to move on to full-time employment,” said Cheryl Carr, who is the president of the Gogebic Country Club’s Board of Directors. “So we were looking for somebody and Gary had worked with Tyler and managed the golf pro shop. He had the background and knowledge of the course, the golf syst...

  • Ryan Niemi takes over Devil football program

    Pat Krause|Apr 8, 2015

IRONWOOD - Football and being around the athletic fields at Luther L. Wright High School have been two constants in Ryan Niemi's life. Now he'll get the chance to combine the two as he was hired to be Ironwood's new head football coach after Dan Niemi recently stepped away from the position. "I've played here, coached here and live in town," Ryan Niemi said. "I actually thought about coaching here back when I was in high school. It's a real big honor to be in this position." Ironwood athletic...

  • Duke, Wisconsin step into title game spotlight

    Apr 6, 2015

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Duke languished in the shadows of Kentucky all season, the big blue juggernaut that nobody seemed to be talking about. It was a rarity for a program with such a championship pedigree, not to mention a record-setting coach and superstar freshmen. They can thank Wisconsin for finally returning to the limelight. The fun-loving Badgers ended the Wildcats' pursuit of perfection in the national semifinals, and set up an intriguing showdown in Monday night's title game: Duke trying to give Mike Krzyzewski his fifth national c...

  • DiGiorgio named to All-UP First Team, Berwald to Second Team

    Jason Juno|Apr 4, 2015

MARQUETTE — Ironwood senior Jake DiGiorgio was always more worried about how the team did than how many points he scored or rebounds he acquired. This season, the Devils usually won and DiGiorgio (6-5) was usually a big part of that. His hard work paid off with a spot on the All-U.P. Class ABC First Team as selected at Wednesday's 65th annual meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. In as competitive a year as ever in Class D, Bessemer senior guard Lance Berwald landed a spot on the All-U.P. Second Team. D...

    Jason Juno|Apr 3, 2015

MARQUETTE — Frannie Zelinski became the latest Watersmeet Nimrod to be honored, while Emily DiGiorgio helped the Ironwood girls break a nine-year drought. Zelinski was named to the All-U.P. Class D Second Team, while DiGiorgio was a Class ABC Second Team selection at Wednesday's 40th annual girls basketball meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. The last Red Devil to make the All-U.P. team was Brittany Pertile in 2006. She made the Second Team in back-to-back years, also earning a spot in 2005. DiGiorgio, a...

  • Ironwood wins first softball game of season

    Apr 1, 2015

HAYWARD, Wis. — The Ironwood Red Devil softball team won its first game of the season Tuesday, defeating Hayward 17-8. “We’re happy to get started and get a win,” said first-year coach Tim Routheaux. “We only had nine players due to solo ensemble and some injuries, so we had a lot of girls in new positions. They did a nice job.” Freshman Taylor Mylly earned the win for Ironwood. “She did a really good job,” Routheaux said. Hayward jumped out to an early 4-0 lead by the second inning as Ironwood helped with errors. “We had three errors in the...

    Jason Juno|Mar 28, 2015

SUPERIOR, Wis. - Ironwood's Jared Joki won the 800-meter run by an even narrower margin than the day before as Joki and Rachel Hudacek were the Red Devils' winners at the 37th annual Dennis Simpson Invitational. McClarey led much of the race until Joki was able to make it neck-and-neck down the final straightaway. Both leaned...

The Red Devils' Jared Joki edged Northland Pines' Kody Radtke by a quarter of a second to take the 800-meter run, the only...

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - Tim Buerger of Ironwood won the United States Snowshoe Association 5-kilometer junior men's national championship at Eau Claire, Wis., on Feb. 28. He finished with the same time as Tyler Dezago of Paul Smiths, N.Y., 21:39.4, but finished just ahead of Dezago. Buerger allowed others to lead the first mile. He then led for 1.5 miles despite falling three times on an icy trail that went through the woods and up and down hills. Dezago came to the final 100-yard straightaway in the...

  • Borseth brings UW-Green Bay dancing again

    Pat Krause|Mar 18, 2015

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Like many basketball fans, this is Bessemer native Kevin Borseth's favorite time of the year. That's because the NCAA Basketball Tournaments are getting underway. But Borseth doesn't just watch the games. He is lucky enough, and good enough, to participate in them as the head coach of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay's women's basketball team. After posting a 27-4 overall record and winning its 17th-consecutive Horizon League regular season title, this past Sunday the Phoenix...

  • Devil of a defeat

    Jason Juno|Mar 17, 2015

MARQUETTE - Ironwood didn't have an answer for Iron Mountain's physical presence inside and the Red Devils' season ended in a 72-52 loss in Monday's Class C regional semifinal. The Moutaineers, 21-2 and ranked second in the final U.P. Class ABC poll of the season, started fast, leading 17-4 going into the second quarter. The Devils made three straight 3s to start the second and pull within 17-13, but Iron Mountain scored the next 15 points to thwart Ironwood's comeback effort. The Red Devils sea...

  • Devils hope to climb past Mountaineers in today's regional semi

    Pat Krause|Mar 16, 2015

IRONWOOD — When the Ironwood Red Devils defeated Calumet last week in the MHSAA Class C District 96 title game, it was the first time Ironwood had won back-to-back district tournaments since 1993 and 1994. The last one came 21 years ago and Red Devil coach Pete Lewinski was in his first two years of coaching varsity basketball in Ironwood. “The (team) records favored us and I thought we were a little tense in the first game,” Lewinski said. “We played not to lose. In the second game, we played much better and (Jake) DiGiorgio took over in the...

  • Trojans slow down Speedboys for district title

    Pat Krause|Mar 14, 2015

WAKEFIELD - Crystal Falls Forest Park has such big, strong, athletic teams that have played in so many pressure-packed football and basketball games, you must bring your A game when playing the Trojans to have any chance to win. That was especially true in Friday's MHSAA Class D District 127 tournament title game at Cardinal Gym, where the Bessemer Speedboys fell to Forest Park 75-42. "I'd give us an A for effort and a D minus for our shooting," Bessemer coach Jim Partanen said. "Overall, I'd sa...

  • South Shore's run ends in state semi

    Garett Greenwald, Ashland Daily Press|Mar 13, 2015

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Megan Gustafson and the South Shore girls did all they could to dig themselves out of a first-half hole Thursday, but it just wasn't enough. Wisconsin Rapids Assumption opened up a 35-16 halftime lead and went on to defeat the Cardinals 57-43 in a WIAA girls Division 5 state semifinal at the Resch Center. The Royals will meet Barneveld in Saturday's state title game. This will be the third straight year the teams will play for the gold ball. Barneveld routed Fall River 66-34...

    Jason Juno|Mar 11, 2015

KINGSFORD - Ontonagon showed it could compete with Crystal Falls Forest Park in the second half of Tuesday's MHSAA Class D regional semifinal. But it was too late by then. The Trojans jumped to a 29-5 halftime lead, taking advantage of an Ontonagon scoring drought that lasted approximately 10 minutes. Forest Park picked up a 50-28 win to advance to the regional final against Munising back in Kingsford Thursday. Munising beat Bark River-Harris 48-45 in Tuesday's nightcap. Tuesday just wasn't...

  • Red Devils withstand Purple Hornets 3-point barrage

    Jason Juno|Mar 10, 2015

IRONWOOD - L'Anse didn't have much of an answer for Ironwood inside, but with the 3-point shot falling, the Purple Hornets were able to give the much taller Red Devils a scare. Ironwood survived, thanks in part to shooting 16 of 20 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, for a 58-48 victory Monday in a MHSAA Class C District 96 semifinal. "I thought we were rusty," said coach Pete Lewinski, whose Devils hadn't played since a Feb. 24 win over Wakefield-Marenisco. "Maybe their fine play had...

  • Cardinals hold off Nimrods

    Pat Krause|Mar 10, 2015

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco came from behind to defeat Watersmeet 56-53 in a first round game of the MHSAA Class D District 127 Tournament on Monday night. Not very often does a freshman move up from the junior varsity to the varsity for the district tournament and not only play well but become a difference-maker in the game. In trying not to make too much of a big deal over one game, but fans in the Cardinal Gym were shocked by Jacob Suzik's performance. Watersmeet took a 24-21 lead by...

  • Midgets chopped by Loggers

    Jason Juno|Mar 9, 2015

PHILLIPS, Wis. - Coach Mike Swartz never stopped believing his Hurley Midgets would be playing in Saturday's WIAA Division 4 regional final. Even after the team's 0-5 start. Hurley's 10-game winning streak came to an end as No. 1 Phillips eliminated the No. 3 Midgets 70-46 in Saturday's regional final. They overcame early injuries to Mitchell Maki and Jake Tenlen and went from that 0-5 start to a second-place finish in the Indianhead Conference's East Division and then to Saturday's trophy...
