  • Midgettes bring defense to the WIAA dance

    Jason Juno|Feb 23, 2015

HURLEY - Defense helped Hurley win a share of an Indianhead Conference East Division championship. Now the Midgettes are hoping it brings them a regional trophy. The Midgettes (17-5) gave up 50 or more points just twice this season on their way to a 10th straight Indianhead title – they've taken the East Division title all four years since the conference split into divisions. Now they are looking for their first regional title since 2012. "The next (goal) on our list is winning a regional," Hurl...

  • Midgets celebrate '49 state champs, Sukanen's 1,000th point

    Jason Juno|Feb 21, 2015

HURLEY - Junior James Sukanen made school history on a nostalgic night in Hurley. Sukanen became the eighth Hurley boy to score 1,000 career points as Hurley beat Butternut 62-24 Friday night. That came after Hurley honored the 1949 state champion boys basketball team. Sukanen led all scorers with 19 points and stands at 1,004 for his career. He needed 15 and his shot at the basket with about five minutes left in the first half gave him 1,000 exactly. "James is a kid, he's a hard worker, he's a...

  • Cardinals win share of IC East crown, down Devils

    Pat Krause|Feb 21, 2015

WAKEFIELD - There's a first time for everything. On Friday night on their home court, the Wakefield-Marenisco girl's basketball team became co-champions of the Indianhead Conference East Division with Hurley with a 58-28 victory over Ironwood. It was the first time a Wakefield-Marenisco team has shared or won a title, since the Cardinals joined the Indianhead in 2011. Both W-M and the Midgets had 13-3 conference records. "I'm very satisfied with how we've played this year," W-M coach Pete Yon...

  • Midgettes cap wild 21.6 seconds with win

    Jason Juno|Feb 20, 2015

HURLEY - Hurley has a week off before the postseason starts, but Thursday night's game may have been good enough to keep the momentum going that long. After trailing much of the evening, Hurley capped off a whirlwind 21.6 seconds - and the regular season - with a 38-35 victory over Ashland. Hurley tied the score at 35 with 1:45 left on a Natalie Moon free throw. The Midgettes played solid defense on Ashland and forced a long jump shot at the end of a long possession. It didn't go and Hurley...

  • No drama in round two: Lady Samsons lose by 17 at Finlandia

    Jason Juno|Feb 19, 2015

HANCOCK - The sequel didn't pack the same drama as the first meeting. Finlandia University defeated the Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons 66-49 Wednesday at Paavo Nurmi Center. It was nowhere near as exciting as when the teams met in Ironwood. Sam Ofstad's 3-pointer before the buzzer won that game 69-66 for the Lady Samsons. Instead the tone was set right off the bat Wednesday when Gogebic started the game with four straight turnovers and Finlandia took an 8-0 lead. "It was almost like...

  • Samsons make game of it after first 10 minutes, but Lions win

    Jason Juno|Feb 19, 2015

HANCOCK - It was a pretty good game after the first 10 minutes. Finlandia came out of the gates on fire and then held off Gogebic Community College's comeback efforts for a 81-66 win Wednesday. The Lions (11-13) scored the game's first 13 points, including three triples to start the game. FU built the lead to 30-10 before the Samsons started chipping away. They got it down to 13 points before the half, but Finlandia held for the last shot and Tyler Koski's basket made it 48-33 at the break. "We...

  • Tigers stonewall Cardinals

    Jason Juno|Feb 18, 2015

MERCER, Wis. - Hurley may be Mercer's biggest rival, but the Tigers did the Midgettes a big favor with Tuesday night's 61-52 victory over Wakefield-Marenisco. The Midgettes clinched at least a share of the Indianhead Conference East Division title with W-M's loss. W-M will tie Hurley for the division title if it wins Thursday against Washburn and Friday against Ironwood. Mercer was already eliminated from contention for the top spot in the division, but it protected its home court by winning...

  • Samsons close regular season with win

    Jason Juno|Feb 16, 2015

IRONWOOD --- The Samsons hope they haven't seen the last of the Lindquist Center this season. Gogebic Community College defeated Fox Valley Tech 77-65 Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Samsons finished .500 at home, 6-6. To play here again, the Samsons have to win in St. Paul on Feb. 25, against Dakota County Technical College in the NJCAA Division II Region 13 opener. The winner of that game hosts the region final that weekend. "I like our chances; obviously we have to play well and...

  • Devils survive Speedboys to clinch share of East Division title

    Jason Juno|Feb 14, 2015

IRONWOOD - It's not often conference titles take a backseat to anything. But beating one of your biggest rivals with a wild finish in front of a pumped up crowd, that's hard to beat. Ironwood clinched at least a share of the Indianhead Conference East Division title with a 61-59 victory over Bessemer Friday night. The Red Devils need to win just one of their remaining two games to take the championship outright. The week started out bleak with a Tuesday loss at their other rival, Hurley, but...

  • Midgettes stop Speedgirls

    Jason Juno|Feb 13, 2015

BESSEMER - Hurley put the finishing touch on its resume going into Saturday's seeding meeting with a 54-32 Indianhead Conference victory at Bessemer Thursday night. The Midgettes took advantage of Bessemer turnovers in the first half for a 35-14 halftime lead. Bessemer was led by Whitney Trcka's 18 points, including 11 in the first half, but the shorthanded Speedgirls didn't get a field goal from someone else until midway through the third quarter. "I think we sped them up; that was part of our...

  • Midgets upset No. 3 Devils

    Jason Juno|Feb 11, 2015

HURLEY - Part of Hurley's 0-5 start to the season was a 27-point loss at rival Ironwood. Part of the Midgets' turnaround - and what now is a six-game winning streak - is a 53-37 victory over Ironwood Tuesday night. The Midgets upset Ironwood, tied for third in the U.P. Class ABC poll, with a monster third quarter, holding the Red Devils to just three points and scoring 19 themselves. "What a great win for us," Hurley coach Mike Swartz said. "We got down seven (at the half), we didn't hang our...

  • DCTC nips Samsons as rivalry grows

    Jason Juno|Feb 9, 2015

IRONWOOD - The site of the tournament matchup between these two teams had already been determined, but Saturday's game was proof of how much of a rivalry this has become. Dakota County Technical College defeated Gogebic Community College 67-64 Saturday in a fantastic game that featured 11 lead changes and seven ties. DCTC swept the regular-season matchups. All it needed was the first win to host the NJCAA Division II Region 13 playoff opener vs. GCC on Feb. 25 in St. Paul, Minn. "This is a big...

  • Tigers complete sweep of Red Devils

    Pat Krause|Feb 7, 2015

IRONWOOD - One bad quarter did in the Ironwood girls basketball team as they fell to the Mercer Tigers 60-47 in Indianhead Conference action at the John Krznarich Gym on Friday night. "They out-scored us 16-4 in the third quarter," Ironwood coach Tim Routheaux said. "We got in a little foul trouble and they have Lexi (Engler) who has played for four years and can go inside and (Shania) St. Germaine who shot four 3s from the outside. They lit us up in both games. "We're young and we're taking...

  • Gladiators dominate Nimrods

    Jason Juno|Feb 6, 2015

ONTONAGON - Ontonagon had its best night of the season offensively as the Gladiators defeated shorthanded Watersmeet 62-32 Thursday. The Nimrods won the first matchup 37-35 in the season opener. But Watersmeet, which only has six players on its roster to begin with, was missing senior captain Jessica Barajas (illness) this time. Plus, Ontonagon has played better of late, especially offensively, picking up its fourth straight victory. The Gladiators reached 51 points twice this season, both...

  • Guards wear down Devils in battle of division leaders

    Jason Juno|Feb 4, 2015

WASHBURN, Wis. - Up-tempo Washburn exposed Ironwood's lack of depth, handing the Red Devils their first loss of the season, 64-45, Tuesday night. The battle of Indianhead Conference leaders was as good as advertised for the first three quarters. Ironwood took the early lead, Washburn pulled ahead midway through the second quarter and was able to pull away in a fourth quarter they started with just a seven-point advantage. That was due in large part because the Castle Guards ran the Red Devils...

  • Midgets upset 2nd-place Cardinals

    Jason Juno|Jan 31, 2015

HURLEY - South Shore's Blake Reijo poses quite a challenge with his outside shooting ability. Earlier in the week, Ironwood went with 6-5 Jake DiGiorgio to slow down Reijo (6-3). On Friday night, Hurley utilized 5-5 Kohl Manzanares with some help from 5-11 Colton Dowd against the Cardinal sharp shooter. Both strategies worked. The Midgets knocked off South Shore, which is in second place in the Indianhead Conference West Division, 56-42 Friday night. "I thought they did a fantastic job on h...

  • Midgettes down Diggers

    Jan 28, 2015

HURLEY - Hurley rolled past Mellen 54-25 Tuesday night in Indianhead Conference action. "We played much better defense tonight and we had a lot better energy throughout the game," Hurley coach Steve Eder said. "We shot well right out of the gate. We hit our first couple buckets." Kirkie Pecotte led Hurley with 11 points. Eleven players scored for the Midgettes. "We fouled a little more than I'd like in the first half with eight fouls, but overall our energy was a lot better than it was last...

  • Eagles soar over Midgets in OT

    Jan 24, 2015

HURLEY - Solon Springs dealt Hurley a homecoming heartbreaker, winning 62-60 in overtime Friday night. "We battled," Hurley coach Mike Swartz said. "I just feel bad for my guys. They've been working hard, doing things the right way, you just hope it'll turn around." Hurley led what was a close contest throughout 51-48 in the final minute. The Midgets' Jake Tenlen missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Solon Springs missed a triple try and Hurley got the rebound. Mitchell Maki had the ball knocked...

  • Samsons hammer Hibbing for 4th straight win

    Pat Krause|Jan 22, 2015

IRONWOOD -The Gogebic Community College Samsons have entered uncharted territory with their fourth straight victory, a 101-61 blitzing of Hibbing Community College at the Lindquist Center on Wednesday night. "I think we've played very well of late," Gogebic coach Dennis Mackey said. "We turned the corner when we won two games at Marshfield, beat NIU and won tonight. Each guy had to learn and accept their role on the team and they are accepting those roles. We're playing better as a team. We...

  • Speedgirls survive Nimrods

    Jason Juno|Jan 21, 2015

BESSEMER - Bessemer held off Watersmeet's furious rally to beat the Nimrods for the first time since 2012 41-40 Tuesday night. The Nimrods defeated Bessemer in the last six meetings with the Speedgirls' last win coming on Jan. 20, also at the House of Noise. Watersmeet took the first meeting of the year, 65-43. This one wasn't a sure thing until the final buzzer rang as Watersmeet's Bethany Baldwin was stopped on a drive to the basket with a chance to win. "It's a big win for our girls,"...

  • Gustafson towers over W-M Cardinals

    Jason Juno|Jan 17, 2015

WAKEFIELD - In a battle of Indianhead Conference division leaders, South Shore's Megan Gustafson towered over everyone. The 6-3 Iowa recruit scored 49 points, grabbed 24 rebounds and blocked six shots as the South Shore Cardinals beat the Wakefield-Marenisco Cardinals 76-46 Friday night. It was the first loss of the season for W-M, which fell into a tie for first in the East Division with Hurley. But Gustafson was dominant from the get-go, scoring 21 of South Shore's 24 points in the first...

  • Midgets continue winning ways

    Jan 16, 2015

HURLEY - The Hurley Midgets picked up their fourth win in their last five games, 67-54 over Mellen Thursday. The Granite Diggers led 48-47 going into the fourth quarter where the Midgets outscored them 20-6. "Ugly, but we came out on the good side," Hurley coach Mike Swartz said. "Right now, we're not picky. We'll take wins anyway we can get them." And the Midgets played well in the fourth quarter, making good decisions and making 7 of 10 free throws. "We definitely have a lot of work to do....

  • Ofstad's 3 sinks Finlandia

    Jason Juno|Jan 15, 2015

IRONWOOD - Gogebic vs. Finlandia. Sam Ofstad vs. Marissa Burke. Neither matchup could have been more even. Gogebic Community College's Sam Ofstad nailed a 3-pointer on top with two seconds left to give the Lady Samsons a 69-66 victory over Finlandia Wednesday night. The triple gave Ofstad a game-high 30 points, three more than the 27 scored by Burke of Watersmeet. "I didn't know how many seconds were left, so when I got the ball, I shot it right away," Ofstad said. "Luckily it went in. This was...

  • Samsons fall to Finlandia on shot with 2.6 seconds left

    Jason Juno|Jan 15, 2015

IRONWOOD - Gogebic's shot to tie bounced around multiple times before falling. Finlandia's shot to win was far more improbable. Finlandia's Tyler Koski got to the basket and made the game-winner with 2.6 seconds left to give the Lions an 81-79 victory Wednesday in a fantastic game between U.P. college teams. "Tough to lose that way, but at the same time, good effort by the guys," Gogebic Community College coach Dennis Mackey said. "They never quit." There were often three All-U.P. Dream Team...

  • Unbeaten Red Devils pounce on Panthers

    Jason Juno|Jan 14, 2015

IRONWOOD - Ironwood couldn't miss in the first half as the Red Devils raced past Ewen-Trout Creek 68-50 Tuesday night. The Devils were 5 of 6 from behind the arc in the first half and 13 of 20 from inside of it. That put the Panthers in a big hole, 45-20 at halftime of the non-conference game. Knowing they would be outmatched inside against the tall Red Devils, the Panthers started off with a man-to-man defense. "It didn't go well, so we figured we'd pack it in inside because they got lots of...
