HURLEY - Hurley secured its second undisputed Great Western Conference championship with a 51-6 victory over Baraga Friday night. The Midgets finished 4-0 in the conference. BAYFIELD, Wis. - Ironwood's Jared Joki broke free from the pack late to win Thursday's Indianhead Conference Copperud Open cross country meet at Mt. Ashwabay. IRONWOOD - Ironwood lost its final home game of the season 8-0 to Phillips Tuesday. It was the last home game for seniors Robert Burchell, Noah Terzano and Matt Dary. "I thought we played well in the first half," Ironwood coach Don Cvengros said. "We were only down by three in the first half. The kids are getting a little better." BESSEMER - Even triple overtime didn't seem like enough to settle this one. Hurley's Devin Czerneski ran in from one yard out in the third OT to give Hurley a 32-26 Great Western Conference victory over the Gogebic Miners Friday night at Massie Field. MERCER, Wis. - The Mercer Tigers aren't just beating Indianhead Conference East Division teams, they refuse to lose a set. The Tigers swept Ironwood Thursday night in front of a big and loud crowd. The Tigers easily won the first game 25-8 and then outlasted Ironwood in two hard-fought matches to close it 25-22 and 26-24. HURLEY - Hurley was as shocked Friday as Crystal Falls Forest Park was last week. Northland Pines came back from a 23-6 deficit to hand Hurley a 37-31 non-conference loss at Veterans Memorial Field. That came one week after the Midgets came back from a 14-6 deficit in the final 6:30 to win at Crystal Falls. HURLEY - Hurley found out this week that it was hosting a cross country meet. On Thursday, the girls won the team title by a single point over Washburn, 40-41. The trails in Oulu, Wis., were too wet for a race and it turned out to be a nice, sunny day in Hurley. Washburn and third-place South Shore both had two runners in the top four. The Routheaux family will continue its tradition of producing head basketball coaches. Deke Routheaux was the head coach at Gogebic Community College for many years and his son, Tim, was hired Monday night by the Ironwood Board of Education as the new varsity girls’ basketball coach after Noel Aho stepped aside after four years.
