La CROSSE, Wis. - The weather was the story of the day once again Saturday and Mercer's Lexi Engler competed in the 200-meter dash and triple jump at Saturday's state track-and-field meet. Strong storms stopped action just 20 minutes into Saturday's action. More than 5.5 hours later, at 4:30, running events started again. Jason Juno|Jun 7, 2014

La CROSSE, Wis. - Mercer's D'kota Engler was no stranger to pole vaulting inside thanks to this year's brutal winter that never seemed to end. So it was no surprise that he cleared 13-0 inside at Friday's WIAA Division 3 state track-and-field meet at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse's Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. Strong storms moved through La Crosse just after the Division 2 and 3 portion of the meet started Friday afternoon. The meet was stopped 700 meters into the 3,200 relay...

    Pat Krause|May 19, 2014

By PAT KRAUSE sports@yourdaily globe.com HURLEY — The Hurley Midgets played well but fell to a tough Tomahawk team 5-4 in non-conference action on Saturday morning. With the game tied at 4-4 after six innings, the Hatchets pushed across what turned out to be the winning run in the seventh inning. In Hurley's last-at-bat, the Midgets had runners on second and third but couldn't get the crucial hit to bring them in. "It was a close, competitive game," Hurley manager Aaron Bender said. "They are a very good team. We played real well and had g...

  • Badgers figure to rebound after tournament run to Final Four

    Apr 7, 2014

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Stung by defeat, Frank Kaminsky made one last proclamation in the locker room before packing up for this memorable season. "This is a sour taste," the 7-footer said after Wisconsin's 74-73 loss to Kentucky in a thriller in the Final Four. "We are going to be back next year. We are going to be better than ever. We will all be ready." The keyword is "all," because it sounds like Kaminsky and forward Sam Dekker are coming back in the fall. If that's the case, Wisconsin...

  • Payneful day for Delaware Blue Hens

    Mar 21, 2014

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Adreian Payne sent Tom Izzo a text. He wants to leave a legacy. Consider it done. The 6-foot-10 senior played the game of his life Thursday, scoring a career-high 41 points to help fourth-seeded Michigan State look every bit like a March Madness favorite in a 93-78 victory over Delaware. "He was playing in another zone, not even in the ozone," Izzo said. "He was in Pluto and beyond." This marked the first 40-point performance in the NCAA tournament since Stephen Curry did...

  • Bluejays end Midgette tourney hopes

    Jason Juno|Mar 8, 2014

By JASON JUNO [email protected] ATHENS, Wis. - Top-seed Athens ended No. 4 Hurley's season with a 54-38 victory in Friday's WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal. Hurley finished the season at 16-6 with a strong effort in the semifinal, almost pulling within four points in the third quarter. But the Midgettes weren't able to generate offense off its defense and Athens was a tough 1 seed on its court with a tough defense of its own. "The last two days we worked on playing aggressive...

  • Trojans use size, power to ground Cardinals

    Pat Krause|Mar 8, 2014

EWEN - Too strong. Too physical. Too athletic. And just too darn good. That described Crystal Falls Forest Park as it captured the MHSAA Class D District 127 Tournament championship game with a 65-50 victory on Friday night. "I was very happy with our defense," said Trojan coach Chris Nocerini. "That has been our strength all season. We wanted to shut down No. 10 (Kevin Lane) and No. 32 (Colin Gagnon). Lee Graff and Jeff Johnson did the job. We put our big guy (Austin Carlson) in the paint and...

  • Falcons turn tables on Midgets

    Jason Juno|Mar 3, 2014

ABBOTSFORD, Wis. - What a difference a year makes. After being dominated at Hurley in last year's WIAA Division 4 regional final, Abbotsford returned the favor Saturday with a 63-30 victory. The No. 2 seed Midgets never could get an effective offense going against the top-seeded Falcons. Abbotsford, with four players listed at 6-4 or taller, made Hurley pay for its attention inside with nine 3-pointers. "Our kids played hard. It was just like we were in quicksand all night," Hurley coach Gary Gi...

  • Midgets march on with comeback victory

    Jason Juno|Mar 1, 2014

HURLEY - Friday night was all about comebacks. Hurley's Jared Wendt missed three free throws heading into halftime and later helped forced overtime at the line while ending up with the game of his life. His teammate, Brad Vaara, had a big 3 in the final two minutes after fighting off injuries and a recent shooting slump. And the biggest comeback of the night: The No. 2 Midgets came back from a five-point deficit in the final 2:34 of the game to force overtime and beat No. 3 Athens 66-63 in Frida...

    Feb 22, 2014

SOCHI, Russia (AP) - For the rematch, Canada skipped the overtime and shelved the theatrics. Jamie Benn scored in the second period, Carey Price made 31 saves, and Canada beat the United States 1-0 Friday night in the semifinals of the Olympic men's hockey tournament. Canada advanced to the gold-medal match Sunday against Sweden, which beat Finland...

  • Speedboy stunner

    Jason Juno|Feb 19, 2014

BESSEMER — Everything — everything — was stacked against Bessemer Tuesday. The fourth-ranked Class ABC team in the U.P., Ironwood, opened up a 17-4 lead on the Speedboys, which had lost three of their last four, and now were dealing with an ankle injury to leading scorer Ben Zielinski. The Speedboys, though, came back and pulled the surprising upset, 46-45 over their archrivals, on a buzzer beater by Lance Berwald, his only points of the entire game. “They were huge,” Bessemer coach Jim Partanen said. “It's a nice win. I hope the monkey's of...

A perfect pairing, they were nearly flawless at the Sochi Olympics, and on Monday they became the first Americans to win an ice dance gold medal. “The closest we came to breaking up, I can’t pinpoint one because there hasn’t been one,” Davis, 27, said. “Certainly there have been struggles. It hasn’t been easy to get where we are. ... I...

HURLEY - Hurley controlled the game and led from start to finish in defeating Bessemer 54-46 in a battle of second-place Indianhead Conference East Division teams at the Hurley K-12 School. Back on Dec. 16, the Speedboys took down the Midgets 67-49 in the House of Noise, but it was a reversal of fortune for the Midgets, who took over sole possession of second, on Friday night. "It was an accumulation of a fun week of playoffs approaching, homecoming and playing very well after they beat us by 18...
