IRONWOOD - Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski picked up his 500th varsity basketball win in Friday's win over W-M. In his 22nd year as boys basketball coach, he's 259-212. At Andress High School in El Paso, Texas, he went 68-29 in three years ending in the 1988-89 season. As varsity girls coach at Ironwood, Lewinski went 173-143 in 15 years ending in 2006 when the sport moved to the winter with boys and Lewinski couldn't coach both the boys and girls anymore. Combined, he sits at 500-384. "This a...
WASHBURN, Wis. - Once Washburn's high-powered offense moved into high gear, there was no stopping it. After putting up just 22 points in the first half, the Castle Guards scored 27 in the fourth quarter to move past Ironwood - which had led most of the game - 68-59 in a battle of Indianhead Conference division leaders Tuesday night. Each team won at home in the season series but only Tuesday's game counted in the conference standings. "That was two good basketball teams. That was two really...
IRONWOOD — Michael Cretens is a good outside shooter. Just not Saturday, when he entered the final three seconds 0 of 8 from behind the 3-point line. Cretens got open, took the inbound pass with 1 second on the shot clock and drained the game-winner in Gogebic Community College’s 71-68 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Marinette. It was Gogebic’s second straight win and first this season without Bryce Bilski, who is now battling a knee injury. Cretens, a 6-1 freshman from Gladstone, was mobbed by teammates multiple times after...
IRONWOOD — On Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, the women's basketball team of Gogebic Community College returned home from the Anoka Classic in Coon Rapids, Minn. with an 0-2 record. The team had not played well in its first two games and it looked like a long season might be on its way. This past Saturday, the Lady Samsons blitzed the UW-Marinette Lady Bucs 69-43. It was their 17th win in their last 22 games. Gogebic is now a team that is coming on hard and fast. If you're still skeptical, consider the comments of veteran UW-Marinette coach Jeff S...
HURLEY - Hurley nearly came back to pull off another upset of Washburn, but the West Division leading Castle Guards were too tough in a 58-45 victory Friday. The Midgets shocked Washburn early in the season by coming out of Washburn with a win. Unfortunately for Hurley, that was a non-conference game. In the Indianhead Conference matchup Friday, Hurley held Washburn to a season-low 58 points, but the Midgets couldn't fully overcome a 16-point first half of their own. "They've been dropping 70,...
IRONWOOD - The UW-Superior JV Yellowjackets stung Gogebic Community College 85-82 in overtime at the Lindquist Center on Wednesday night. From the time GCC's Sam Ofstad sank a twisting 13-foot shot from the lane with 18:40 left in the first half to 19.4 seconds in the game, the Lady Samsons held the lead. And when Brittany Raisanen buried a triple from the right corner and Britni Kisul tossed in two free throws with 4:06 remaining in the game, Gogebic looked in control with a 65-53 advantage....
MILWAUKEE (AP) - These days, there's no place like this Midwest outpost for NBA teams to end a long road trip on a high note. Blake Griffin dominated the paint with 20 points, Jamal Crawford scored 25 and the Clippers ended their nearly two-week journey away from Los Angeles with a 114-86 win Monday night over the Milwaukee Bucks. Forced to travel more than 11,000 miles through the air during the trip because the Staples Center was occupied by the Grammy Awards, Griffin looked right at home in...
IRONWOOD - In a non-conference game that had the feel of something much bigger, the tall and talented Ironwood Red Devils showed they could rise up in a big game and carved out a 65-58 win over Washburn on Tuesday night. The game generated a lively interest among fans since both teams were undefeated in their divisions of the Indianhead Conference. Washburn was 7-0 in the West Division (10-1 overall) and Ironwood was atop of the East with an 8-0 record (8-1 overall). The Red Devils were also ran...
WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco continued to steadily move towards basketball respectability with a come-from-behind 44-37 win in a crossover Indianhead Conference game at the Cardinal Gym on Monday night. "It was a game of two evenly-matched teams," Cardinal coach Pete Yon said. "We're similar teams. Drummond is real physical and rebounds well with a lot of put-backs. Our girls will be sore after this one. I'm proud of the girls. We finished strong at the end and it was a great home victory....
IRONWOOD — In what was thought to be the most exciting race and finish in SISU Ski Fest history, Doug DeBold, of Wayzata, Minn., raced to a razor-thin win over Santiago Ocariz, of Moorhead, Minn., in the 42k Marathon-Men's Classic even though both finished in the same time of 2:24:06. The race was determined by a photo finish and it was lucky the camera had six sensors, because all were all needed to make the final call. "I had no idea who won," DeBold said. Santiago said DeBold took off and went into the lead at the 14k mark, but he and C...
By PAT KRAUSE [email protected] IRONWOOD — Snowmobile racing action returned to the Gogebic County fairgrounds for the second weekend in a row with the USSA ProStar events being featured on Saturday and Sunday. Last week, the classic vintage sleds were in the spotlight, but this weekend it was the Premier late model snowmobiles that can reach speeds of over 100 miles per hour that took center stage. The TLR Cup races are the signature events in the USSA Pro Star Racing Series and world champion Nick Van Strydonk, of Tomahawk, Wis., w...
HURLEY — It's been almost 10 years since an Indianhead Conference team came to Hurley and beat the Midgettes. It took a Division I prospect both times. On Friday, Megan Gustafson led South Shore to a 50-33 win over Hurley in a battle of Indianhead division leaders. On Feb. 2, 2004, Jolene Anderson scored 49 points in a 78-73 victory. Anderson went on to become the Wisconsin Badgers' leading scorer; Gustafson is being recruited by 14 Division I schools. "I came here four times when I was at W...
At least for a few more hours, Allison (Bailey) Bottoms, a 1997 Ewen-Trout Creek graduate, holds the Upper Peninsula career scoring record. At 2,131 points, Bottoms, a 6-1 center, is one of just three U.P. girls basketball players to have scored more than 2,000 points. Crystal Falls Forest Park's Lexi Gussert will likely pass her tonight - she needs 13 - in the Trojans' home game against Bark River-Harris. She stands at 2,119 points. Gussert, a Michigan State recruit, is a 6-0 do-it-all player f...
Less than two weeks after reconstructive right knee surgery in February 2013, Lindsey Vonn already was sounding a positive note, saying she was “really looking forward to Sochi” and defending her Olympic downhill gold medal. Along the way to the next Winter Games, though, Vonn began facing more setbacks. As she’d move past one, another would surface. In the end, it was too much, even for Vonn, the most accomplished U.S. ski racer in history. Expected to be one of the biggest stars at the upcom...
EAST LANSING (AP) - Keith Appling made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 29 seconds left and finished with 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds to help No. 5 Michigan State beat No. 3 Ohio State 72-68 in overtime Tuesday night after blowing a 17-point lead in the second half. The Spartans (14-1, 3-0 Big Ten) led 55-38 and the Buckeyes (15-1, 2-1) forced overtime with a 20-3 run to close regulation. Ohio State entered the day as one of six unbeaten teams in Division I. Aaron Craft's three-point...
By PAT KRAUSE [email protected] IRONWOOD — At the 2014 Pro Vintage snowmobile races, adverse weather and track conditions forced the cancelation of the final day of snowmobile racing at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds on Sunday. But Pro Vintage Director Kurt Krueger still termed the fourth annual event "very successful." Even with temperatures hovering around minus ten degrees and wind chills approaching 25 below zero at times, Krueger said it wasn't the cold that stopped the races. "...
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) - Connor Cook passed for a career-high 332 yards and hit Tony Lippett with a tiebreaking 25-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, leading No. 4 Michigan State to a 24-20 victory over No. 5 Stanford on Wednesday night in the 100th Rose Bowl. Cook also threw a TD pass to Trevon Pendleton, and Jeremy Langford rushed for 84 yards and a score in the first Rose Bowl victory in 26 years for the Big Ten champion Spartans (13-1), who finished the season with 10 straight w...
ALLEN PARK (AP) - Jim Schwartz was hired to turn around the Detroit Lions and he did it for three seasons. He failed to keep the Lions going in the right direction the next two years - and it cost him his job. The Lions fired Schwartz on Monday, one day after their late-season slide ended with a loss at Minnesota. He had two years and nearly $12 million left on his contract. Schwartz informed the players of the decision during a team meeting. "I feel awful for him," Lions center Dominic Raiola...
HURLEY - Ironwood played well and Hurley did not. It was that simple and it led to Ironwood getting off to a good start early in the new year by downing Hurley 57-46 in an important Indianhead Conference rivalry game on Thursday night. "At times, we looked really good and at times we had some breakdowns," Red Devil coach Pete Lewinski said. "Overall, we did a good job. It seemed like we had a bitter taste from the Ashland game (a 64-37 loss). It was just that we could have given them a better...
CHICAGO (AP) - Aaron Rodgers is back leading the Green Bay Packers and that could be bad news for every other playoff team. He returned from a broken collarbone and is taking aim at a postseason run, even if it took one big pass to get there. Rodgers fired a 48-yard touchdown to Randall Cobb in the final minute, and the Packers beat the Chicago Bears 33-28 to capture the NFC North championship on Sunday. "This is a special group of guys who've been through a lot," Rodgers said. "It's been a...
ASHLAND, Wis. - The shorthanded Hurley Midgettes trailed most of the game, but they fought back for a 44-42 victory over non-conference rival Ashland Saturday afternoon. Hurley was without Gabby Pecotte and Natalie Moon, who were both injured in Friday's win over Ironwood. The Midgettes led 2-0 Saturday, then trailed until Kirkie Pecotte hit the game-winning free throw with three seconds left in the game. Ashland built a six-point lead in every quarter, but it never was able to build it past nin...
HURLEY - Girls basketball in this area had been wildly unpredictable in the early stages of the season, and when Hurley lost two of its four games, there was talk that perhaps the Midgettes' reign of championship basketball was in jeopardy. But Hurley proved on Friday night that it was too soon to start writing that book as they convincingly defeated Ironwood 54-28 in an Indianhead Conference rivalry game. "We're not last year's team," Hurley coach Melissa Oja said. "We're this year's team and w...
IRONWOOD - Ironwood was ready for Bessemer this time. After losing to the Speedboys in the first matchup last season, Ironwood overcame terrible shooting in the first quarter and a never-say-die Bessemer team for a 67-56 win Thursday night. "I reminded the boys what Bessemer did to us last year (a 55-51 win) and took us by surprise a little bit," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. On Thursday, "I thought Bessemer gave us all we could handle. I thought they gave us an excellent game and I give cr...
EWEN - Opponents don't often leave Ewen with 34-point victories. But Lake Linden-Hubbell already is playing like the U.P. top-five Little 5 team it was last year and Ewen-Trout Creek is adjusting to an inexperienced team that is playing one of the toughest schedules of anyone in the U.P. Lake Linden won 84-50 on Saturday night. Even the Panthers' JV team went 18-2 last year and the E-TC varsity team hasn't finished under .500 since the 2004-05 season, so nobody was used to playing from that far...
IRONWOOD - It was a game that seemed destined for overtime after it was tied after one quarter, a one-point game at the half, tied at the end of three quarters and tied through much of the fourth quarter. In what will be of thought of as one the most exciting games of the year, Ironwood defeated the Bessemer Speedgirls in overtime 48-44 at the John Krznarich Gym on Friday night. "We knew if we played our best we could beat them," said Ironwood's Jessica Gering, who had a dream night of 24...
