HURLEY — Hurley finished the regular season at 8-1 with a 55-12 rout of Ontonagon in Great Western Conference play Friday night. The Midgets learn their playoff seed and matchup today with Level 1 scheduled for next Friday or Saturday. They should get a home game and a No. 2 or 3 seed is realistic, but there are so many variables it’s impossible to predict. “Good season, 8-1. Let’s get on to the second season now,” Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. “I think our team is focused. I think they...
CALUMET — With a belly slide in the end zone, the Calumet Copper Kings ended a slide of their own Friday. Calumet put itself into the win column at Agassiz Field, holding off a second-half Ironwood rally to defeat the Red Devils 26-14 in both teams’ final WestPAC games of the season. “I’m just proud everyone kept believing in what we do around here,” Calumet coach John Croze said. The Kings (1-7, 1-5 WestPAC) have been beset by injuries throughout the season, with six seniors alone out for t...
IRONWOOD — In the Indianhead Conference second-place crossover volleyball game, Washburn needed five sets to edge Ironwood 25-19, 27-25, 16-25, 24-26 and 15-11. Both teams had finished second in their division, Ironwood in the East and Washburn in the West. It was all-around, good volleybal...
HURLEY — Just two days before an even bigger stage, Ironwood came away with both individual titles and were a tiebreaker away from the girls team crown at Thursday’s Indianhead Conference Championships. Ironwood’s Jared Joki pulled ahead of Drummond’s Steven Carlson on the final loop behind the Hurley K-12 School and Ironwood’s Jessica Gering won the girls race. The Devil girls tied with South Shore with 49 points. The first tiebreaker is the sixth-place runner, but neither team had more than...
DETROIT (AP) — Austin Jackson was dropped from first to eighth in the batting order, and suddenly the Boston Red Sox couldn’t get him out. A revitalized Jackson delivered in manager Jim Leyland’s revamped lineup as the Detroit Tigers built a big lead and held on this time, beating the Red Sox 7-3 Wednesday night to even the AL championship series 2-all. Torii Hunter had a two-run double and Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs after Leyland dropped the slumping Jackson to eighth in the order and m...
Andy and Jill Borseth went to the Ferris State Bulldog Women’s Golf Invitational Saturday to see their daughter Hallee, who plays for the Lake Superior State University golf team. But it was Hallee, pictured here, who surprised them. On the 154-yard par-3 15th hole, Borseth got a hole-in-one as her delighted parents looked on. She used a 4-hybrid. Hallee finished 50th with a score of 88-86—174 at Big Rapids. Borseth won three U.P. Division 3 golf titles for the Ontonagon Gladiators. She als...
DETROIT (AP) — The last time Justin Verlander took the mound, his team’s season was on the line. The stakes won’t be quite that high for his next start, but the Detroit Tigers could certainly use another brilliant performance from their star right-hander after blowing a chance to take control of the AL championship series. Detroit wasted a five-run lead Sunday night in Game 2, allowing the Boston Red Sox to even the series with a 6-5 victory. David Ortiz’s tying grand slam in the eighth inning...
WAKEFIELD — The Gogebic Miners experienced great fall football weather and excellent fan support in overpowering the Ontonagon Gladiators, 36-20, in a Great Western Conference game on homecoming Saturday. “It was the seniors’ last game on their home field and they went out with a win,” Miner coach Mark Mazzon said. “For homecoming and some of its distractions, we came out and played very well. We want our players to enjoy homecoming, but their main job is to win the game. Everybody got to pl...
IRONWOOD — Ironwood came as close as it possibly could to winning its first game but fell to Hancock, 28-26, in overtime in an exciting West-PAC game on Friday night. “I thought I was going to have a heart attack,” Hancock coach Matt Walter said. “Every time I come here it’s tough and a very close game. We’ve lost two games on two-point conversions, so it was good to finally win one the same way. But I think losing on those two-point conversions taught us to keep fighting no matter what and we...
HURLEY — Hurley steamrolled past an outmanned Washburn/Bayfield/South Shore 49-6 Friday night at Veterans Memorial Field. Consider the first quarter. The Midgets had an opening kickoff return for a touchdown called back due to penalty. W/B/SS didn’t enjoy it long as Mark Saari ran 90 yards for a touchdown on the first play. He rushed for 172 of his 217 yards in the first quarter as the Midgets piled up 29 points in the frame. Saari rushed for four first-half touchdowns and it became his third ru...
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Justin Verlander ripped off his jersey and rubbed Torii Hunter’s bald head. The Tigers pulled on goggles and popped bubbly, then waited for their straggling slugger. At last, Miguel Cabrera walked through the door to chants of “Miggy! Miggy! Miggy!” Detroit’s two biggest stars, Verlander and Cabrera, teamed up Thursday night to send the Tigers back to the AL championship series with a 3-0 winner-take-all victory over the Oakland Athletics in their division series. ...
BESSEMER — Playing with focused enthusiasm, the Wakefield-Marenisco volleyball team stunned Bessemer 25-22, 25-21 and 25-10 in a matchup of rivals in the House of Noise. Cardinal senior Miranda Sibley was a force at the net with 11 kills and four blocks and she said she had played in at least 10 games against Bessemer since coming up as a freshman and this was only the second time she could recall beating the Speedgirls. “We were all fired up in the locker room,” Sibley said. “I think we surp...
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — It’s Justin Verlander and Sonny Gray, the encore. These decisive Game 5s sure are becoming familiar for Verlander. Not so much for the Oakland rookie. Just like last October in Oakland, the Tigers have been pushed to a winner-take-all fifth game in their AL division series against the Athletics. And Detroit will have Verlander on the mound again Thursday night after he pitched a four-hit shutout in the 2012 clincher at the Oakland Coliseum. “Well, you don’t pretend...
IRONWOOD — The Gogebic Community College Lady Samson volleyball team continued to improve and rolled over Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College 25-16, 25-9 and 25-14 at the Lindquist Center on Breast Cancer Awareness Night. “I thought we played very well,” GCC coach Aaron Bender said. “Anytime you get a win is big. We’re getting better — absolutely. We served well and had 18 total aces. We’ve played poorly at some spots in the season, but the last five games our passing has been much bet...
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — James Jones wouldn't be denied a Lambeau leap after a long touchdown catch. So when a Lions fan — sitting in enemy territory, no less — pushed him out of the stands, the Packers receiver tried to make the traditional celebratory jump one more time. Success. His 83-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter was just the big-play spark the Packers needed to liven up an offense that otherwise settled for field goals in a 22-9 win Sunday over the undermanned Detro...
IRONWOOD — In an Indianhead Conference East Division volleyball showdown of undefeated teams, Mercer cranked up the intensity and emotion and swept the Ironwood Red Devils 25-21, 25-18 and 25-18 at the John Krznarich Gym on Thursday night. Both have one conference game left. Ironwood is 9-1 overall. The T...
ISHPEMING — Ironwood’s No. 1 doubles team of Danielle Begalle and Rachel Pallin won a U.P. Division 2 title Wednesday while No. 1 singles player Katie Piispapnen was runner-up. “This was a big day for Ironwood tennis,” Ironwood coach Annette Burchell said. “To have Ironwood playing in the championship round for both No. 1 singles and doubles was huge. I’m proud of our whole team.” Begalle and Pallin beat Munising’s Adelle Gendron/Alex Paquette 6-4, 7-5. They lost their first set in the opening...
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Ironwood jumped out to a 4-0 first-half lead and went on to beat Three Lakes 5-1 Tuesday in the Red Devils’ final home game of the year. Senior Bryant Rowe picked up a hat trick on Senior Night. “The kids were fired up for this game,” Ironwood coach Don Cvengros said. “We’ve been starting slow at home for some reason. Tonight they were ready. They wanted this one.” Ironwood’s Riley Jarocki was cleared by a doctor to play and he scored the game’s first goal on an assist by J...
IRONWOOD — Jim Betchek, a former teacher and coach at Luther L. Wright High School, passed away Sept. 22 at the age of 85. Many in this area may not know or remember Betchek; he lived in Ironwood from 1956-61. But while he was here, he made quite an impression. Mostly, he left his mark in coaching high school sports such as football, basketball and track and field. And it was in basketball, where he was a head coach, that he left his biggest imprint. Betchek was a star athlete at Berrien Springs High School in many sports during the 1940s...
IRONWOOD — There’s only one thing that Ironwood’s Katie Piispanen likes better than playing tennis. And that’s winning when she plays tennis. “I love the competition and I try my best to win,” Piispanen said. “That’s my motivation. I don’t like to lose matches.” Piispanen’s journey into the tennis world began when she was in sixth grade and coach Annette Burchell ran a tennis camp at Luther L. Wright High School. It peaked her interest and she became hooked on the sport. It didn’t take Piispa...
HURLEY — Hurley shut down Gogebic’s offense, including drives inside the Hurley 25 to start both halves, as the Midgets rolled for a 30-0 victory Friday night. Hurley completed its toughest part of the schedule with a 3-1 record, recovering fully from a 31-14 loss to Crystal Falls Forest Park two weeks ago with wins at Northland Pines and Friday against Gogebic. “I’ve really been happy with how we responded after that loss,” said Hurley fullback Mark Saari, who rushed for 232 yards and score...
BESSEMER — Bessemer did not bring its A game to the House of Noise on Thursday night, but the Speedgirls played solid volleyball and swept Hurley 25-22, 26-24 and 25-23 in Indianhead Conference action. “This was probably one of our better games as far as hitting,” Speedgirl coach Shelly Mettler said. “Julie Ahnen had her best game overall. She was everywhere and put it together tonight. She carried us through. We moved her around and she can make the transition on the court easily. Sarah T...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jim Leyland sat behind his desk, his blue-and-orange Detroit Tigers hat covering a lowered head. Amid the din of players shouting and chanting a few feet away in the visitor clubhouse at Minnesota, the 68-year-old manager was asked how that sound of celebration made him feel. “They're awful happy,” Leyland said, barely looking up and repeating himself after his voice cracked hard on the first try. Even a gruff, grizzled guy like Leyland can get emotional in moments like these...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Detroit Tigers were soaked in the joy of another division title, jumping around in their matching, drenched T-shirts when Torii Hunter darted from the room. He came back a few seconds later, bear-hugging an important piece of the party: manager Jim Leyland. “I got Skip! I got Skip! I got Skip!” Hunter yelled. The gruff old skipper was smiling wide, and he even did a little dance before retreating to his office. The Tigers were sure having fun, and they want to throw a big...
