  • Midgets sweep Midgets

    Pat Krause|May 14, 2013

HURLEY — In dominating fashion, Hurley blitzed Butternut 17-4 and 18-4 as Hurley's hitting attack came to life with 35 runs and 35 hits. Game 1 — Hurley 17, Butternut 4 The strangest part of the first game of the doubleheader was that Butternut took a 3-0 lead after one inning. Butternut's Riley Christian was safe on an error, Ryan Prellwitz walked and Steven Scherwinski hit a frozen rope single to right field. Christian tried to score from second base but was gunned down on a strong throw fro... Full story

  • Routheaux inducted into U.P. Sports Hall of Fame

    John Vrancic|May 13, 2013

HARRIS — One day last summer, Deke Routheaux of Ironwood made the short trip to the Gogebic Country Club to enjoy a round ofgolf. Little did he know it would turn out to be much more than that. That was the day the retired Gogebic Community College basketball coach learned he was being inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. “We were out on the course when (U.P. Sports Hall of Fame council member) Nancy Osier nonchalantly mentioned that I was being inducted,” said Routh...

  • Wings force Game 7

    May 11, 2013

DETROIT (AP) — Henrik Zetterberg took a big step as the leader of a storied franchise, snapping a scoring slump in a clutch way with his second goal in overtime. The Detroit Red Wings Red Wings still have a shot to advance in the NHL playoffs. Zetterberg netted his second goal 1:04 into overtime to lift Detroit to a 4-3 win over the Anaheim Ducks in Game 6 on Friday night to extend the first-round series. "Those two were kind of ugly ones, but that's what you need in the playoffs," he said. S...

The Red Devils have started off the year at 3-0. Game 1 - Ironwood 8, Butternut 7 Butternut led 7-5 after four innings, but Ironwood scored three times in final inning to edge the Midgets 8-7 in game one of the doubleheader Tuesday night. • Weather nice, fields not for track invites

    May 7, 2013

The Jack Kraemer Invitational was moved from late April to early May because it always seemed to be postponed because of the weather. Monday was Kraemer day in Ironwood when track-and-field teams from across the region come to compete in what is usually the biggest meet of the year locally. And the weather was great with temperatures in the 60s; the sun was even out. Too bad the field event areas at Longyear Field in Ironwood were covered with snow, like the shot put. The track had puddles and...

  • Ducks-Red Wings series shifts to Detroit tied at 1

    May 4, 2013

ROMULUS (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings had a setback during their series-evening victory at Anaheim. Detroit defenseman Danny DeKeyser broke his right thumb in the third period of the 5-4 overtime win in Game 2 on Thursday night, and is out for rest of the playoffs. DeKeyser signed with the Red Wings on March 29, soon after finishing his college career at Western Michigan. “It was a big loss and it’s hard to believe a kid out of college would be a big loss, but he is,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock...

  • Sanchez struggles early, Tigers lose to Twins

    May 2, 2013

DETROIT (AP) — Anibal Sanchez struck out the first two hitters he faced — then the trouble began. A walk. A double. Then another walk and a single. Suddenly, the Detroit right-hander was struggling to get out of the first inning. Sanchez settled down eventually, but this was nothing like his 17-strikeout performance last week against Atlanta. Instead, he gave up three runs in six innings, and the Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 6-2 on Wednesday. “I think Sanchy was just too excited at the s...

  • Devils edge Washburn in first game

    May 1, 2013

WASHBURN, Wis. — Ironwood overcame a 4-0 deficit and then held off Washburn in the last inning to win 9-7 in their first game of the season in Indianhead Conference play on Tuesday night. “In the first inning, we were like a fawn trying to stand on its legs for the first time,” Ironwood manager Dan Niemi said. “This was our first experience outside the gym and it took us about three innings to get going. But I was very happy and very satisfied with the boys, because we didn’t lay down and we ke...

  • Midgettes' offense lights up Ashland

    Jason Juno|May 1, 2013

ASHLAND, Wis. — Ashland sent out an email to a bunch of teams Tuesday trying to find an opponent because it had a rare commodity — a playable field on a nice day. Unfortunately for Ashland, Hurley was the team that jumped on the chance. The Midgettes’ bats came alive as Hurley beat the Oredockers 18-7 on a warm Tuesday. The Northland College field was ready for action and both Hurley and Ashland were happy to be able to get another game in — even though it wasn’t scheduled until early Tuesday af...

  • Fielder powers Tigers

    Apr 30, 2013

DETROIT (AP) — Prince Fielder put Detroit ahead with a three-run homer, and as if on cue, Max Scherzer settled into a groove. That’s been the formula for these Tigers — starting pitching and power. Fielder’s towering drive in the sixth inning lifted Detroit to its fourth straight victory Monday night, 4-3 over Minnesota. The Twins led 3-1 before the slugging first baseman’s homer, and Scherzer struck out the last four men he faced in the seventh and eighth to help preserve the win. “I was ab...

    Jason Juno|Apr 27, 2013

RHINELANDER, Wis. — The Hurley Midgettes may have lost 2-1 to Rhinelander Friday, but they beat every other local team: They played a game outside. Even if it took until April 26 and an 80-mile drive to the southeast where the snowpack is nearly gone. Hurley plans on playing again today, three games in a tournament at Gilman, which is roughly between Tony and Thorp and is the site of the Midgettes’ 2010 sectional championship victory over Thorp. “We didn’t really play all that bad for not com...

  • Ansah new to football, newer to Lions

    Apr 26, 2013

ALLEN PARK (AP) — Ziggy Ansah was born and raised in Ghana, playing soccer and shooting hoops without ever seeing a snap of football. When he moved to the United States in 2008, some missionaries suggested he attend Brigham Young and try out for the basketball team. He fell short there, but was willing to listen again when friends persuaded him to play football for the first time in 2010. It has paid off and then some: On Thursday night, the Detroit Lions made him the No. 5 overall draft p...

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Red Wings moved a step closer toward extending their postseason streak to 22 with a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. Jordin Tootoo netted the go-ahead goal early in the third period, and Johan Franzen scored on a power play with 6:26 left, lifting Detroit into eighth place in the Western Conference. The Red Wings, who have won two straight games, are one point ahead of Columbus and one behind seventh-place Minnesota. All three teams have two g...

  • Valverde returns to Tigers with 1-2-3 save

    Apr 25, 2013

DETROIT (AP) — For the Detroit Tigers, it felt like 2011 again. Two of the key components of that year’s AL Central division champs reunited Wednesday night to help the Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 7-5. Victor Martinez drove in a pair of runs and Jose Valverde returned to Detroit with a save. Martinez missed all of last season with a knee injury, and entered the game hitting .182. On a 39-degree night, he was robbed of extra bases by Eric Hosmer in his first at-bat, but he had an RBI dou...

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks coach Jim Boylan admits his team has a daunting task in taking on the Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs. The eighth-seeded Bucks open the Eastern Conference playoffs on the road Sunday against the NBA’s defending champions. “We’ve got a lot of young players and for many of them, this will be their first time in a playoff series, said Boylan, who replaced Scott Skiles as coach in early January. “Facing the world champions is a daunting task. You’re pl...

  • NASCAR rallies after Boston bombings hit home

    Apr 20, 2013

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — The MIT police officer killed during the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombing suspects was the brother of a machinist for Hendrick Motorsports, bringing the events of this past week closer to home for NASCAR teams already rallying around the tragedy. Sean Collier, who began working for Massachusetts Institute of Technology about a year ago, was found shot to death late Thursday in his vehicle in Cambridge, Mass. Police have said Collier was responding to a report o...

    Apr 18, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — One big deal done for the Green Bay Packers, one to go. The Packers locked up star linebacker Clay Matthews with a long-term extension Wednesday, and also is negotiating with quarterback Aaron Rodgers. “It feels good,” Matthews said Wednesday during a news conference inside the Packers’ locker room. “It’s funny, because not a whole lot has changed. I’m happy about it but for me, it’s nice, it’s very humbling and it’s a blessing, but it’s business as usual for me. I’m gla...

  • Michigan losing Hardaway Jr. to draft

    Apr 18, 2013

ANN ARBOR (AP) — Tim Hardaway Jr. is moving on to the next challenge, well aware that he’ll still need to prove himself if he’s going to follow his father’s footsteps in the NBA. “Everybody’s going in there with the same mindset,” Hardaway said. “There’s no leeway.” Hardaway announced Wednesday that he’ll forgo his senior season at Michigan and enter the NBA draft. He’s the second Wolverine to declare early for this year’s draft — national player of the year Trey Burke announced his departure Su...

  • Pallin wraps up second season as snocross pro

    Pat Krause|Apr 17, 2013

IRONWOOD — Professional snocross racer Kyle Pallin of Ironwood recently celebrated his 22nd birthday — in Sweden. It wasn’t that Pallin has become a jet-setter flying all over the world. After finishing his second season as a pro in the Amsoil Championship Snocross Series, he was invited by a Swedish friend, Mats Lauger, to culminate his season with four races in Sweden. Lauger had raced on the American circuit and he and Pallin became friends during the 2011-12 racing season. Lauger set Pallin...

  • Lots of snow, few spring sports

    Jason Juno|Apr 12, 2013

Ironwood tried snowblowing the track at Longyear Field Monday. “It didn’t really go too good,” Ironwood athletic director Gordy Erickson said. “It’s all thick, heavy and icy. We are at an absolute standstill.” The WIAA softball regional tournament starts about a week early this year, May 16. That’s a month from Tuesday and the start of the season isn’t in sight. With another snowstorm forecast to continue today on top of feet of hard-packed snow and ice, spring sports on the Gogebic Range m...

  • Boggetto, Wolfe among top local finishers at Powderhorn

    Apr 5, 2013

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Local racers fared well at last weekend’s snowmobile race and hill climb at Big Powderhorn Mountain. The Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers (MASTERS) Racing Circuit Snow Drags and Snowmobile Hillclimb took advantage of the late-winter snow, although rain that froze Sunday turned the soft snow of Saturday to ice. Bessemer’s Keegan Boggetto edged out Iron River’s, Sidney Storti and Keegan’s 3-year-old brother, Nolan, to win the 120 cc feature Saturday. The junior cl...
