IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Local racers fared well at last weekend’s snowmobile race and hill climb at Big Powderhorn Mountain.
The Mid America Snow and Terrain Expert Racers (MASTERS) Racing Circuit Snow Drags and Snowmobile Hillclimb took advantage of the late-winter snow, although rain that froze Sunday turned the soft snow of Saturday to ice.
Bessemer’s Keegan Boggetto edged out Iron River’s, Sidney Storti and Keegan’s 3-year-old brother, Nolan, to win the 120 cc feature Saturday.
The junior class, and two junior drivers for the World Championship were determined Sunday. Montreal’s Jordan Wolfe, running the same course as the pro drivers, not only made it over the top, the 13-year-old ran a 58-second run in his first snowmobile hill climb. After the first round in juniors, Wolfe was the only junior driver to make the hill.
In the second round of the junior division, none of the junior drivers made the hill, thus giving Wolfe the Junior Championship. Wolfe and Luke Maher of Hastings, Minn., both qualified for the 2014 World Championship Hillclimb.
It was between the first and second runs for the pro drivers that the youngest snowmobile hill climbers took to the hill in the popular 120 cc class Sunday. Wisconsin’s Preston Miller looked to be the clear favorite but got stuck in a rut right before the finish line. Then Boggetto turned in an exciting 30-second run.
Keegan’s younger brother, Nolan set a high mark, and Kaeden Kaurala ended the first round of 120 cc sleds with a 1:06 second run. In the second run, Kaeden led off the competition with an excellent 44-second run. All the other drivers between the ages of 3 and 9 failed to make the hill. This gave Keegan Boggetto a first, with Kaeden Kaurala second.
