MATT LEQUIA, formerly of Champion, is the newest trooper at the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post. Lequia graduated with 90 other recruits from the 124th Michigan State Police Trooper Recruit School in March in Lansing.
WAKEFIELD — According to Michigan State Police Trooper Matt Lequia, of the Wakefield Post, it all started for him as an Upper Peninsula boy in middle school.
“I did a ride-along with a trooper and I got a good taste of what it was like,” Lequia, formerly of Champion, said.
Lequia is a trooper at the Wakefield Post after graduating from the 124th Michigan State Police Trooper Recruit School in March in Lansing, along with 90 other recruits.
“I am really excited,” Lequia said. “I am happy to be in the Upper Peninsula and close to home.”
According to Lequia, his hometown and his new home are “similar, however I really haven’t had a chance to explore the area yet.”
His education includes a degree in criminal justice from the Northern Regional Police Academy and a bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University at Marquette in criminal justice with a minor in emergency medical services. He also worked in law enforcement in Chocolay Township in Marquette County.
He doesn’t have a lot of experience with the western end of the U.P. “My only experience is camping at Lake Gogebic, however I am really happy to be here. I love the U.P.”
