Daniel R. MacArthur

ASHLAND, Wis. — Daniel R. MacArthur, 92, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center, in Ashland.

He was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Ashland, the son of Alexander and Mary (Stevenson) MacArthur. In 1939, he graduated from Ashland High School. In 1942, Dan entered the service and served in the U.S. National Guard 32nd Division Army and was stationed in the South Pacific.

On Jan. 3, 1948, he married Gladys Goldinger in Ashland.

He was the owner and operator of Ole Hanson’s Grocery Store in Ashland. Dan worked for Montgomery Wards, Hub Clothing and Ken’s Clothing in Ashland. He also worked as a maintenance engineer for Ashland Health and Rehabilitation Center and was a custodian at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ashland.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Congregational Church in Ashland. Dan enjoyed playing softball and bowling. He was a Yankees fan, but enjoyed watching the Brewers and Packers. Dan liked going to Ashland Oredocker football games but always walked on the opposing team’s sidelines.

He is survived by his three children, Jeff (Karen) MacArthur, Cottage Grove, Minn., Pat (Dale Kuivanen) MacArthur, Bergland, Mich., and Marie (Bruce Crawford) MacArthur, South St. Paul, Minn .; a daughter-in-law, Susan MacArthur, Mellen; six grandchildren, Steve (Julie) MacArthur, Stephanie (Chad) Dockter, Melissa Spruell, Jeremy (Wendy) MacArthur, Daryl Lutz and Erica Lutz; seven great-grandchildren, Cassie MacArthur, Allison MacArthur, Breanna and Gabe Dockter, Emma Sorenson and Maggie and Ella Lutz; one brother, Bill MacArthur, Ashland; a sister, B. Noreen Gurske, North Carolina; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys, on April 29, 2013; a son, Allan, on Oct. 21, 2009; a great-grandson, Charles Mac Spruell; and three brothers and six sisters.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Roberts Funeral Home in Ashland, with Dr. Darrel Robertson officiating.

Interment will take place in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
