LANSING — The Colby Mine Memorial Ceremony in Bessemer won “Best Local Commemoration of Michigan’s 175th Birthday” on April 6, according to a press release from the Michigan Daughters of the American Revolution.
The Colby Mine Memorial Ceremony was held last summer during Bessemer Blast in recognition of the area’s mining past and Michigan’s 175th birthday. It included music by the Gogebic Range Concert Band, presentation of colors by local color guard and the recitation of the United States and Michigan pledges by the Bessemer Girl Scouts. Bessemer mayor John Frello, president of Pasty Central Charlie Hopper, vice president of Pasty Central Dan Cvengros, president of Bessemer Women’s Club Sue Abelman, and Master of Ceremonies and DAR member Vicki Mann spoke, according to the press release.
The event will be recognized this summer at Constitutional Hall in Washington DC during the Continental Congress Convention held by the DAR.
Kitty Johnson Fisher coordinated the event, working with the Onagoningkway Chapter of the DAR, Bessemer DDA, the Spartan Project and the Bessemer Area Historical Society.
