WILLIAMSTON, Mich. — Charles “Charlie” Julius Helgren went to live with his Lord and savior on May 17, 2013.
He was born Jan. 10, 1934, to Hilda and Julius Helgren of Ironwood. He graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1951, and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University.
For 31 years, Charlie taught by day at West Junior High School, Gardner Middle School and Everett High School. During evenings, he was also an associate professor at Lansing Community College, where he taught several science classes. He retired from teaching in 1991.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Evelyn Workman; and his niece, Yvonne Hall.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carole (Vescovi); his sisters, Marge (Rudy) Reichardt, of Watersmeet, and Karen (Lloyd) Anderson of Venice, Fla .; his brother, Clarence, of Venice; his sons, Richard (Amy), of St. Johns, Steve (Lori), of Cedar Springs, and Jeffery (Karen), of Dallas Center, Iowa; his grandchildren, Rachel (Robert) Amsterburg, of Savannah, Ga., Emily, of Haslett, Matthew, of Redding, Calif., Laura, of St. Johns, and Molly, Heather and Jeffery Jr., of Dallas Center; and great-grandchildren, Robbie and Gabriel Amsterburg, of Savannah.
The family will receive friends Sunday, June 2, at the Williamston Free Methodist Church, 4400 N. Williamston Road, Williamston, from 6 to 8 p.m.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 3, at the church at 3 p.m.
