Ironwood girls golf team runner-up at U.P. Finals

NORWAY — The Ironwood girls finished runners-up at the Division 2 U.P. Finals at Oak Crest in Norway Wednesday.

Coach Mark Kukowski said his research didn’t unearth a past U.P. champion or runner-up from Ironwood in girls golf.

Ironwood carded a 458, champion Iron Mountain a 421. Manistique was third at 466.

“We’ve been waiting for one of these for a long, long, long, long time,” Kukowski said.

He said it’s a nice testament to the hard work of this group and to those that have come through the program in years past.

The runner-up finish came in a season Ironwood didn’t have a home meet and only competed for a couple of weeks due to the endless winter.

“I give our girls a lot of credit for hanging in there,” Kukowski said. “They put their stamp on Ironwood history.”

Korrie Trier led Ironwood with a 100. She took fourth overall and medaled. Maighlin Kolesar finished with a 105.

“It was nice for Korrie,” Kukowski said. “Maighlin has been so darn close over the years. I’ve been proud of how hard she’s worked. For Korrie to work hard and get that selection, I’m proud of her as well.”

Iron Mountain’s Cassie Feira and Katelynn Johnson had the day’s low scores at 96.

Hancock won the boys meet with 324. Ironwood took seventh at 397. Bryant Rowe led Ironwood with a 96 and Luke Hewitt had a 97.

“Our inexperienced guys had a nice round,” Kukowski said. “They had a chance to see what it’s going to take to get to the next level. I know they’re going to work hard this summer. There are good things to come for Ironwood golf.”

L’Anse’s Tristen Leaf carded the low score of 74.
