HURLEY, Wis. — Joan W. Sipponen, 80, of Hurley, died Sunday, March 17, 2013, at Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley.
The former Joan Berg was born Aug. 7, 1932, in Ironwood, Mich., daughter of the late Carl and Gladys (Osborne) Berg, and attended Ironwood schools and Luther L. Wright High School. She resided on the Sipponen family farm in Kimball for many years before moving to Garden Estates in Hurley and then to Villa Maria Health and Rehabilitation Center. An avid bowler, she bowled in Hurley leagues for many years. She also enjoyed going to the casino.
She married Eugene A. Sipponen on Aug. 14, 1954. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1995.
Surviving are two brothers, Gordon (Janet) Berg, Watertown, Mass., and Douglas Berg, Frontenac, Kan .; a sister, Charlotte Grandahl, Onion, Mich .; brother- and sister-in-law, Toivo and Elsie Sipponen, Ironwood Township; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Clifford Berg.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 13, at 2 p.m., in the Hurley Cemetery, with the Rev. Rosemary DeHut, pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church in Ironwood, officiating.
Coffee and dessert will follow at Sharon’s Coffee Co. in downtown Hurley.
