SUN CITY, Ariz. — Raymond J. Ashe Sr. passed away peacefully at home in Sun City on July 3, 2013.
Born Sept. 1, 1916, in Bessemer, Mich., Ray was the son of John and Nettie (Tocilowski) Awsiewicz. He attended St. Sebastian Grade School and graduated A.D. Johnston High School in 1933. After attending Ironwood Junior College (now Gogebic Community College), he graduated Michigan State University in 1940.
On June 24, 1944, Ray married Lorraine Scavarda, also a Bessemer native, at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in a ceremony performed by the Rev. Charles J. Swoboda. They raised their family of five children in Detroit and Farmington Hills, Mich. After Ray retired from the Internal Revenue Service, he and Lorraine moved to Sun City in 1980.
Ray is survived by his children, Lorry Ashe Kempf (Jerry), Raymond Jr., Peter (Anne), Gerard (Fran) and John; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and his wife, Ray was preceded in death by seven sisters, Stella Muczynski, Bonita Drazkowski, Josephine DeStasio, Agnes Rothwell, Annette Rue, Marion Laird and Anne Moncher; and one brother, Frank Orr.
A Memorial Mass, presided by the Rev. Raymond F. Moncher, will be celebrated at St. Sebastian Catholic Church on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 10:30 a.m.
Following inurnment at Hillcrest Cemetery, a luncheon will take place at Father Swoboda Hall.
