HURLEY, Wis. — John M. “Jack” Poole, 79, of Ironwood, Mich., died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, in Hurley as a result of an automobile accident.
He was born May 9, 1934, in Sheboygan, Wis., the son of John M. and Margaret (Wynhoff) Poole.
Jack graduated from Sheboygan North High School in 1952 and Michigan Tech in 1956 as a civil engineer. He worked in the cities of Ely and Cook, Minn., ending his career and retiring in Ironwood.
Jack served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1958, being honorably discharged with the rank of Lt. Jr. Grade.
He married the former Rogene Buss on June 23, 1956, in Plymouth, Wis. She preceded him in death in 1973.
Jack enjoyed days on Lake Superior fishing on his boat “Sunset.” He also enjoyed golfing and bowling. He was a member of the Saxon Harbor Boating Club, Saxon Flotilla and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and was past commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Jack is survived by two daughters, Colleen Sachs, Hurley, and Chris (Gary) Paternoster, Buhl, Minn .; two grandchildren, Eric and Amy Paternoster; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Kathleen “Kay” Wamser; her husband, Robert; and his longtime companion, Delphine Gustafson.
Cremation has taken place at Range Crematory in Hurley.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. in the Frick-Zielinski Funeral Home with the Reverend Jean B. Rencontre officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Inurnment will be in Plymouth, Wis., at a later date.
