Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
HURLEY — Ironwood took all but one tennis contest from Hurley Thursday at the Hurley K-12 School.
Ironwood’s Katie Erickson and Kristine Mieloszyk blanked Hurley’s Melissa Simonar and Alyssa Starkey 6-0, 6-0, as did Ironwood’s No. 2 singles player, Danielle Begalle, against Hurley’s Hannah Houtari. At No. 1 singles, Ironwood’s Katie Piispanen let only one game slip past her in the second set against Hurley’s Angela Aimone, winning 6-0, 6-1. Ironwood’s No. 1 doubles duo of Payton Aho and Rachel Pallin had similar success, defeating Hurley’s Trisha Smith and Mikayla Sobrack 6-0, 6-1.
The toughest contest and Hurley’s sole win was a three-setter at No. 2 doubles.
Hurley’s Alli Olson and Courtney Miller played aggressive second-serve returns and strong net play to take the first set 6-2 against Ironwood’s Kathleen Mieloszyk and Jamee Bastman. In the 2nd, Hurley was up 3-0 before the Ironwood duo settled down and fought back to tie up the set 3-3 and eventually win 7-5.
Ironwood continued its momentum early in the third set, grabbing a quick 2-0 game lead. Hurley’s Olson/Miller maintained their composure against too many Ironwood errors, taking six consecutive games to win the match.
The Red Devils (2-5) will travel to Minocqua next Tuesday for a doubleheader against Marshfield’s Columbus Catholic and the Lakeland Thunderbirds.
