WAKEFIELD — Out of hundreds of schools and thousands of students across eight states, Wakefield-Marenisco School pupil Kayla Kalmanek was one of 11 students featured in the annual Xcel Energy Safety Calendar for 2013-’14.
Kalmanek, a fifth grader, participated in the contest while in fourth grade and drew a photo with the energy safety tip, “Never unplug electronics with wet hands, or you will be TOAST!”
Her photo was selected for the month of August.
On Friday, Kalmanek was presented with copies of the calendar, as well as a backpack full of goodies and a gift card by Michael BeBeau, community service manager for Xcel.
When asked about her drawing, Kalmanek said she “guessed” she would win.
“I just thought it up,” she said.
BeBeau said each calendar selection features a presentation in the school. Students from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and South Dakota were also selected as winners.
“We do safety programs for students in grades third through fifth,” BeBeau said. “We also have educational materials for teachers, if they are interested.”
BeBeau told this year’s fourth graders about the upcoming contest and said students could ask Kalmanek questions.
“Maybe she can give you some tips,” BeBeau said.
