John L. Cattelino

HURLEY, Wis. — John L. Cattelino, 94, of Hurley, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, in Hurley.

He was born Sept. 11, 1919, in Gile, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Gallo) Cattelino, and attended Gile and Montreal schools. He then worked in a CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) camp in Mercer.

John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on June 21, 1944, participating in action against the enemy on Okinawa and the Ryukyus Islands in the South Pacific during World War II, and was honorably discharged as a private first class at Great Lakes, Ill., on March 15, 1946.

Following his discharge, he worked in the Montreal Mine for 22 years until the mine closed. He then owned and operated the Party Port East Liquor Store in Madison for 10 years, and was employed at Oscar Meyer Co. in Madison for 13 years, retiring in 1984 and moving to Hurley in 1985.

John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley and Iron County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1580. His hobbies included fishing and gardening.

On April 26, 1941, he was united in marriage to Angeline N. Patritto at St. Mary’s Catholic Church by the late Rev. Peter F. Meyer. She preceded him in death on July 3, 1998.

Surviving are a son, John A. “Tony” (Derilyn), Madison; three grandchildren, Deborah (Tony) Zosel, Bloomington, Minn., Beth (Ben) Lancaster, Houston, and Scott Cattelino, Denver; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Olivia and Hadley Zosel, and Caleb and Karina Lancaster; two brothers, Peter (Ardith), Houghton, Mich., and Joseph (Pat), Saxon; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Patritto, Ironwood, Mich., and Joanne Cattelino, La Habra Calif .; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents and wife, John was predeceased by two brothers, Bert and Domenic; a sister, Katie Gotta; and special friend, Blanche Lupino.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley, with the Rev. Frank Kordek OFM, celebrant.

Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hurley, where full military honors will be accorded by the combined Hurley American Legion Post 58 and Iron County V.F.W. Post 1580 Honor Guard.

Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tony Zosel, Ben Lancaster, Scott, Mike and Peter Cattelino, and John Varda.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Iron County V.F.W. Post 1580, 307 Third Ave. So., Hurley, WI 54534, or Villa Maria Health & Rehabilitation Center, 300 Villa Drive, Hurley, WI 54534.
