Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
IRONWOOD - American Idol season 10 finalist Casey Abrams arrived in Ironwood Thursday night in preparation for the annual HIT Idol Show at the Historic Ironwood Theatre.
Abrams, a singer, songwriter and musician from Idyllwild, Calif., will perform tonight at 7. The local winners of Friday night's HIT Idol competition open for Abrams.
Performers ranged from fifth grade to age 29, and came from Gogebic and Ontonagon counties, as well as Iron, Vilas and Ashland counties in Wisconsin.
According to Abrams, this is the first concert he has performed with a competition-style layout after leaving American Idol.
"I'm very biased towards a show like this because I was on a show like that," Abrams said. "I think it's really healthy, because you get instant feedback and the performers can immediately work on things for the future. It helped me out, but I think they will be more honest here versus on TV."
While the Historic Ironwood Theatre is smaller than the American Idol stage in Los Angeles, Abrams said he "loved" the look of the theater instantly.
"I really liked the sign, and I have been seeing some pretty good stuff, like the paintings," Abrams said. "There are good vibes here and I enjoy messing around with the (1928 Barton) organ."
During his performance, Abrams will play some cover songs and new music. In addition to singing, Abrams plays double bass, bass, guitar, keyboards, accordion, sitar, clarinet and drums.
When asked about his experience on American Idol, he said it was "stressful, but more fun than stressful.
"It's a weird feeling, being in front of millions of people," Abrams said. "But it was a good time."
And with his arrival in the Upper Peninsula, Abrams, a resident of southern California, was greeted with two inches of snow covering the ground.
"I love it," Abrams said. "I need more snow in my life."
