2 Hurley kindergarteners place in statewide poster competition

HURLEY - Two Hurley students received awards through the "Wisconsin Knows Children's Mental Health Matters" poster contest.

Kindergartners Olivia DiGiorgio and Miley Kadrlik placed in the statewide poster contest, expressing the theme "My Feelings Matter."

Kadrlik placed second and DiGiorgio third, and both said they were "excited" about the awards.

According to Pam Snyder, Brighter Futures coordinator and mentor supervisor for the Iron County Human Services Department, the contest was presented to local school districts and mental health clinics through the Cooperative Educational Service Agency 12.

"We were asked to distribute the letters widely to get as many kids interested as possible," Snyder said.

The purpose of the contest was to help kids be aware of mental health.

"I think it's phenomenal (to have kids participate)," Snyder said. "You can't separate the kinds of health we have, physical, mental, emotional, it's all part of who we are. How people perceive their own mental health is wonderful. We need more things like this."

DiGiorgio and Kadrlik's posters have been on display at the Hurley K-12 School, along with all of the other winners from across the state. Next, the posters will travel to the Mercer School, before heading to Rhinelander.

"The reason the posters are traveling throughout the schools is to get more kids interested for the poster contest in January," Snyder said.
