Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
IRONWOOD- Auditions for "Rumbo," by Cynthia Mercati began Wednesday evening at the Ironwood Theatre, a production of local high school aged teens.
The slapstick comedy will be performed in February, Director Mary Hansen said. Rehearsals will be twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, until the performance.
The production is a collaboration between the Ironwood Carnegie Library and the Historic Ironwood Theatre. Hansen said she saw a lack of dramatic opportunities for youth in schools.
Last week the library's drama group performed for 600 area students at the theatre, following a summer drama group that performed at Ironwood's Memorial Building.
Carnegie's Assistant Director Lynn Wiercinski described the plot of the play in a news release, "Two commandos rush in and let rip a few thousand off-stage enemies. It's just a commercial-in-progress for Wembly Perfumes' new product, but the taping is anything but smooth. On stage, Rocky Schwartzenburger may be the epitome of macho, but off-stage, he's wailing about hangnails and hollering for his lip gloss and blow dryer. Television star Don Druthers, famed anchorman and exclusive spokesman for Bow Wow Biscuits, is intent on getting an interview with the young and fabulously wealthy owner of Wembly Perfumes, and Big Bad Mama and her girls burst in, bent on kidnaping Rocky for unspeakable purposes."
Auditions continue tonight at 6 p.m. at the theatre.
