IRONWOOD - As part of the High 5 Mentoring program, juniors from Luther L. Wright high school assisted kindergarteners in building gingerbread houses Wednesday morning at Sleight school.
Before their mentors arrived, the students of Michelle Trier's kindergarten class sat at tables with pre-prepared gingerbread houses, or graham crackers glued to large milk cartons with marshmallow crème.
The kids were given various treats to decorate their houses, including marshmallows, peppermints and sprinkles.
The High 5 Mentoring program pairs 11th grade students with one or more younger students in an effort to teach all grade levels benefits of sharing and cooperation.
Sleight School second grade teacher Mary Senk also organized two donation trees to celebrate the "season of sharing."
Students, parents and staff members are able to donate to both organizations throughout the course of the day.
One tree collects donations for the HOPE animal shelter and the other collects donations for the local food pantry.
Items will be collected until Friday.
