Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
Warmer weather draws crowds for second straight week
IRONWOOD - Fans from far and wide gathered in the grandstands at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds for the Pro-series U.S. Snowmobile Association races Saturday and Sunday.
Among the crowd was Ron Fjerstad, father to one of the racers, Joey Fjerstad, 24, of Minneapolis.
Joey Fjerstad has been racing since 2004, working his way up from stock class to championship class. Ron enjoys following his son to the races.
Barb Reinhard, of Ironwood, came out to the races on Sunday. It wasn't her first time.
Reinhard loves going to the snowmobile races and has attended many. Her favorite part is "the adrenaline and the smell," she said.
Another fan, Ron Anderson, of Bessemer, said he sees the races as "something to do to get out of the house in the winter."
The past weekend's Pro-series USSA races was the second weekend of Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus at the fairgrounds. The pro-vintage snowmobile races were held on Jan 3-5 at the fairgrounds.
