Ontonagon-White Pine Rotary treasurer Marilyn Anderson presents a check for $1,184 to Peggy Norris, co-chairman of the Ontonagon County St. Nicholas Project, as Rotary President Janis Burgess looks on. The money represents 90 percent of the money collected by Rotarians and helpers in the Christmas kettle in Ontonagon.
ONTONAGON - Ontonagon County Probate Judge Janis Burgess was re-elected president of the Ontonagon-White Pine Rotary Club.
Burgess begins her second term on July 1. Serving with her and also re-elected were Marilyn Anderson, treasurer, and Jan Tucker, secretary.
The group has agreed to seek a matching grant from the Rotary district for the Theater of the Performing Arts. The theater's cyclorama screen has holes in it and theater officials want to purchase a 28-foot wide movie screen, which can serve that purpose, as well as a movie screen.
The project would also include a new light bar which could provide more than 1,000 different light combinations.
Rotarian Jim Jessup will chair the project. As part of the grant, Rotarians will provide labor for the project.
The Ontonagon-White Pine Rotary also rings the bell for the Salvation Army during the Christmas season. Ninety percent of the money collected through the kettle in Ontonagon returns to the community for the St. Nicholas Project.
Marilyn Anderson is chairman of the project each year and thanked Tammy Lancioni and the young people of the Ontonagon Area School District who helped the Rotarians by tending the kettle after school during the three weeks of the project. She emphasized those who send checks to the Salvation Army from Ontonagon should put them in the kettle, since money donated in the kettle comes back to Ontonagon County.
Anderson and Burgess presented Peggy Norris, co-chair of the St Nicholas Project, a check for $1,184, which is 90 percent of the money collected at the kettle. Norris said the project this year served 199 families, 544 individuals and 192 children in Ontonagon County.
Much of the money was spent on food vouchers for poor and low income families or individuals. With help from the Marine Corps toy project, 290 toys were distributed for children and 98 toys were given to grandparents to give to grandchildren.
Norris said members of the St. Nicholas Project will be willing to assist in ringing the bell next Christmas season.
