Sister Priscilla Simmons

MANITOWOC, Wis. — Sister Priscilla Simmons, 92, a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.

The former Florence Simmons was born on April 1, 1921, in Ironwood, Mich., daughter of the late John and Mary (Michetti) Simmons. She entered the Convent in 1939 and professed her vows in 1941. Sister Priscilla earned a bachelor of arts degree from Holy Family College, Manitowoc and a master of arts degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee.

Sister Priscilla served as a grade school teacher at St. Philip in Green Bay and at Ironwood Catholic Grade School. She served as a high school teacher at St. Willibrord in Chicago, Holy Name High School in Escanaba, Mich., St. Ambrose High School in Ironwood, Holy Family Academy in Manitowoc, and Catholic Memorial in Waukesha. After retiring from teaching, Sister Priscilla served as an activity aide at St. Ambrose Convent in Ironwood and St. Rita Health Center in Manitowoc. Since 2008, she has been a resident of St. Rita Health Center at the Motherhouse.

Survivors include the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity and two sisters-in-law, Alice Simmons, of Medford, and Arlene Kurilla, of Rhinelander. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

She was also preceded in death by Donald Simmons, Betty and Fred Hampel, Colleen and John Melisko, Margaret and Theodore Ellos, Catherine and Clyde Nelson, Priscilla and Arnold Eklund, Cecilia and Val Maccani, Raymond and Alice Simmons, Marie and Roy Sontag and John and Martha Simmons.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at the Holy Family Convent in Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Finian Zaucha, OFM, with burial at Holy Family Convent Cemetery in Manitowoc.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the Holy Family Convent from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at the Holy Family Convent Chapel.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
