Snowshoe walkers enjoy sun

BESSEMER - Bright sunshine, mostly clear blue skies and temperatures in the low 20s welcomed participants of the annual snowshoe walk offered by Bessemer American Legion Post 27 Saturday afternoon.

About 20 area residents came out to enjoy the warmer weather and help stave off cabin fever for Saturday's event, offered by the Legion to help the post and give the community something to do, Commander Russ Johnson said.

Walkers made an hour-long trek through Bluff Valley Park, traveling between 1 and 1 ½ miles. Spirits were high as participants left the Legion, with many attendees smiling, chatting happily and commenting on the beautiful weather.

The Legion offered a spaghetti meal for participants upon their return. The social time also included music provided by Dan Pitrone, director of Marty's Goldenaires.

Most participants were area residents, with a couple from out of town. "We get quite a number here," Johnson said, who added he was pleased with the turnout. He said he was also happy with the weather, which "couldn't be nicer."

The Legion has offered the walk the last two years and hopes to keep it as an annual event, Johnson said.
