IRONWOOD - Sixteen high schools, including 26 teams, competed in the annual Spring High School Quiz Bowl Invitational Tournament at Gogebic Community College Thursday.
Schools were Bessemer, Chassell, Ironwood, Wakefield-Marenisco, Baraga, Hurley, Bayfield, Phillips, West Iron County, Hancock, Phelps and Houghton.
Many schools brought more than one team to the tournament, including teams for both varsity and junior varsity.
Ironwood High School's first team edged Houghton High School in the varsity championship, 360-350.
In the junior varsity championship, Bessemer High School's third team defeated Hurley High School's third team, 380-120.
The event was organized by Carl Vaara and Maria Sokol, and throughout the day, 49 matches were played.
In addition to the spring invitational, GCC hosts a high school Quiz Bowl competition each fall.
"Quiz Bowl is a great opportunity for high schools to compete in academic competition," Vaara said.
