Annual Kiwanis Pancake Day volunteers whip up 325 pounds of pancakes
IRONWOOD - Pancakes in the morning, pancakes in the evening, pancakes at supper time.
Local residents dined on pancakes throughout the day Thursday during the annual Kiwanis Pancake Day at Tacconelli's in Ironwood.
The annual fundraiser is one of the biggest events Kiwanis does each year.
"It's taken place for well over 60 years," Joe Cayer, Kiwanis member, said. "We have families that come each and every year. We have grandkids of grandkids that come, and the ages vary. People in their late 80s to young children."
Volunteers whip up 325 pounds of pancakes and 100 pounds of sausage during the meal, and serve from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Club members, residents and youth volunteer their time, cooking, serving beverages and clearing plates.
"The Key Club from Bessemer High School had a real good turn out of members to help us," Cayer said. "It was excellent."
Proceeds from the event benefit a variety of youth projects in the community.
"This allows the Kiwanis Club to give back the community every penny we profit," Cayer said. "It all goes back to the community."
Once the pancakes and sausage are gone, the club is already looking towards its next fundraiser, Peanut Day.
"That will be in August during the Hurley-Ironwood football game," Cayer said. "We're getting ready."
