Unusual spring weather condition hamper start of construction project
IRONWOOD - Normal traffic patterns will remain on U.S. 2 for another week as delays push the starting reconstruction date back to May 27.
Dean Aberly, transportation technician with the Michigan Department of Transportation, said the delay in construction was due partly to weather-related issues and acquiring materials.
"We had some typical construction type delays with these early starting jobs," he said. "And with this spring being unusual, and a lengthy spring, it has affected road restrictions and getting some materials."
Crews will work Wednesday to redo certain sections of road along the detour route of Lake Street and McLeod Avenue by removing about two inches of old pavement and repaving those sections.
Crews are expected to remove old pavement markings between Thursday afternoon and Friday, and paint new markings at the intersections of U.S. 2 and Lake Street in Ironwood, and U.S. 51 and Silver Street in Hurley to better align the flow of traffic through those intersections.
Aberly said the new schedule, proposed by Snow Country Contracting, isn't expected to delay the final completion date of mid-October.
"They wanted to insure that we were going to be able to meet that deadline," he said.
