Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
ONTONAGON - Six teams competed for Barbecue honors at the eighth annual Barbecue for Life Saturday in Ontonagon. The proceeds of the dinner are donated to the Ontonagon County Cancer Association.
Tom Domitrovich, co-chairman, along with Griff Roehm, said he was pleased with the number of teams entered this year. He noted, however, that one of the original teams Fuzzy-P, was absent since their leader Tom Burgess ruptured his achilles tendon before the event.
Teams participating included: Cowboys, Barbi-Q, Norwich Country Club, Stein Club, Hog Wild of Luck, Wisconsin, and Simple Jerry's.
Judges tasted each of the meat entries and by points selected the top three in each category.
First Place in chicken was Cowboys, followed by Simple Jerry's and Norwich Country Club. Barbi-Q won first place in the brisket category, followed by Norwich Country Club and Simple Jerry's. The rib category was won by Stein Club, with Barbi-Q in second and Cowboys in third. The overall winner was Barbi-Q from Trout Creek.
More than 400 diners had the opportunity to vote on the best "Booyah" and selected Norwich Country Club.
Opportunity Knocking students and adults, TANGO young people, and members of the Cancer Association volunteer groups assisted with the event. Music for the evening was from Borderline.
