IRONWOOD - Elementary students took a break from their end-of-the-year studies to have a little fun during the annual Ironwood PTO picnic at Luther L. Wright School in Ironwood Wednesday.
Students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade ate a picnic lunch outside before participating in games and activities on the football field.
Some visitors to the event included a fire truck from the Ironwood Public Safety Department, troopers from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post and the Klements Racing Sausages.
The sausages visited the kids, shaking hands, giving high-fives and even racing fourth-grade teacher Jason Hofstede.
Students also did a little running of their own, participating in the first ever Fun Run. Students received pledges to keep moving for 15 minutes along the track, either moving "as slow as a turtle or as fast as a cheetah."
Because of the hot temperatures, students cooled off under the spray of the fire hose, laughing and jumping around.
Other activities during the picnic included face-painting and parachute games.
The event was originally planned for the last day of school, but because of make-up days, Ironwood's last official day is Friday.
