OAK LAWN, Ill. - Joseph De Santis, 90, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at Little Company of Mary Hospital, Oak Lawn, after a lingering illness.
He was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Ironwood, Mich., the son of Mary and Peter De Santis.
He married Bernice Bedrick, of Ironwood, on July 26, 1952, at St. Michael's Church.
After graduation from Luther L. Wright High School in 1942, he joined the U.S. Army in World War II, serving as a military police officer in 1946.
Following military service, he was employed as a meat cutter at A & P Stores.
Joe maintained his service to his country by serving in the Ironwood National Guard with the rank of sergeant until he retired.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He enjoyed his military reunions and most of the time ended up doing all the cooking.
He loved to share his cooking skills and stories with his numerous nieces and nephews.
Upon his retirement, he and Bernice moved to Oak Lawn.
He was an expert cribbage player and enjoyed the game with family and friends.
One of his greatest experiences was visiting the World War II Memorial with his family.
He received special recognition from the Memorial Committee Foundation for his generous financial support.
Joe is survived by his wife, Bernice; son, Joe Jr .; a sister, Anna Mae Strand, Ironwood; and a brother, Peter (Patricia) De Santis, of Wausau, Wis.
At his request, cremation has taken place.
Private funeral services will be held at St. Catherine's Church, Oak Lawn.
