GLADSTONE, Mich. - Mae Elaine Tyree, 87, of Ontonagon, passed away early Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the home of her daughter in Gladstone.
Elaine was born in Highland Park to Lloyd and Elsie (Broemer) Mattson on July 18, 1926. The family returned to Ontonagon in 1932 and moved to an 80-acre farm on the Cranberry Road in 1934. Elaine graduated from Ontonagon High School in 1944. She attended Ferris State College and then moved to Racine, Wis., where she met and fell in love with Daniel Tyree.
Elaine and Dan were married in Racine on April 17, 1948. The couple returned to Ontonagon in 1951. They became members of the Ontonagon United Methodist Church in 1964.
Elaine worked for several area employers, including Bechtel Corporation in White Pine and later Ontonagon Memorial Hospital.
Elaine is survived by her three children, Gayle Mentzer, of Troy, John (Masako) Tyree, of Lansing, and Linda (Jon) Starr, of Gladstone; a brother, Robert Mattson, of Williamston; sisters, Susan Matero, of Ypsilanti, Margaret Travis, of Williamston, and Virginia Neuman, of Gaylord; stepchildren, Daniel (Diane) Tyree, of Tishigan, Wis., and Nancy Becker; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Daniel, who passed away in 2010; brothers, John and James; and a sister, Harriet.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. EDT Friday, June 27, at the Cane Funeral Home in Ontonagon, and from 9 to 10 a.m. EDT Saturday, June 28, at the Ontonagon United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. EDT on Saturday, June 28, at the Ontonagon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bruce Steinberg officiating.
Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
