IRONWOOD, Mich. - Ahti A. Nurmela, 93, of Ironwood, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at Westgate Nursing, Rehabilitation and Assisted Living Community in Ironwood.
He was born Dec. 30, 1920, in Ironwood, son of the late Arvid and Selina (Mattson) Nurmela, and attended local schools. He was employed across the Upper Peninsula in logging and later in bridge construction by the J.K. Jackson Co. of Ironwood, and also in construction by A. Lindberg & Son, Ishpeming, and the Thornton Co., Hancock, for many years as a member of Operating Engineers Local No. 324, retiring in 1982.
Ahti was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ironwood. He enjoyed spending time at his farm in Erwin Township, and also fishing, hunting and driving nice cars.
Surviving are numerous cousins; and special friends, Larry and Barb Tibaldo, of Ironwood.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 8, at 11 a.m., preceded by visitation at 10:30 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 100 W. Midland Ave., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Kurt Kovanen officiating.
Committal and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
Luncheon will be served at Tacconelli's in downtown Ironwood immediately upon return from the cemetery.
