Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
HURLEY - Dozens of people attended a drive-in theater style fundraising event at the Hurley K-12 School Wednesday evening held by the 2015 Last Blast Committee.
Hurley students graduating in 2015 and their parents hosted the event to raise money for the class' Last Blast party, which is held annually at the end of each academic year for the seniors and chaperoned by the junior class' parents.
Each year, the class holds the Last Blast party at Gogebic Community College to encourage a non-drinking, safe environment for students to celebrate graduation.
The graduating class of 2014 held a similar drive-in theater event, and this year's class followed suit.
Sue Herlevi, whose daughter will graduate this year, was an organizer of the drive-in.
"We have a lot of great parents volunteering for that," she said, also mentioning the number of other organizations and people who've donated time and equipment. "We had a lot of help."
Two semi-trucks were parked in separate parking lots at the school. The white trailers were used as a screen onto which the movies "Frozen" and "Remember the Titans" were projected. Speaker systems were donated to provide sound, and a concession stand sold popcorn, candy and beverages.
The weather cooperated and the rain held off, but the mosquitoes came out in force after the sun finally set. Gates were opened at 7 p.m. and volunteers and students began collecting the $10 per car entry fee.
The drive-in was just one of the different fundraisers the Last Blast Committee will be doing this year.
"We're going to try to have a fundraiser every month," Herlevi said.
The committee already sold water during the Paavo-Nurmi Marathon, and is looking to have a bake sale, a beef sale, a pizza sale and its annual dodgeball tournament in the upcoming months.
