Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
IRONWOOD - Vehicles were lined up about 12 deep along Ayer Street Saturday morning as sunshine greeted Ironwood's annual fall clean-up day.
City residents got rid of trash of all sorts in the three-hour collection effort manned by city workers and numerous volunteers who were assisting Eagle Waste and Recycling.
Eagle Waste is the city's new garbage collection servicer and City Manager Scott Erickson said the conversion to the new business has been working out well, with many compliments about the service that's being provided.
Members of the new Fighting Yoopers hockey team said they were pleased to contribute to the clean-up effort. They said they were informed about the clean-up day by their owner-coach, Scott Kellett.
Some of the Yoopers are staying in the Gogebic Community College dorms and taking classes, while others are living with host families in the area.
The volunteers assisted in tossing the refuse into large bins or trailers, which were periodically hauled away as they filled.
Mayor Kim Corcoran and Karen Gullan, city clerk, were once again on hand to direct traffic.
The city also conducts an annual spring clean-up day.
