Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Ironwood – The Gogebic Community College volleyball team split two matches on Saturday in the Lady Samsons volleyball triangular at the Lindquist Center Gym.
Gogebic swept UW Barron County 25-13, 25-7 and 25-18 but fell to Dakota County Technical College 25-20, 25-21 and 25-21.
DCTC defeated both teams in three straight sets.
GCC volleyball coach Aaron Bender was pleased with his team's play against UW Barron County.
"We had a nice first game," Bender said. "We got everybody in and the freshmen got a lot of playing time. Everybody did a good job. When we were down by six points, our young girls really fought back."
A number of players had good matches against UW Barron County.
Sophomore Brittni Kisul had six kills and aces along with a block, while Korrie Trier served five aces to go with three kills. Kylea Hoff slammed five kills and freshman Sarah Trudgeon had three kills with eight assists.
Setter Krista Svoboda dished out ten assists and added two kills and a block.
Bender said he wanted to see how Gogebic stacked up against Dakota County Technical College and he wasn't as happy with the second match.
"We meet again down the road in a very key match in the tournament," Bender said. "For quite a bit of the match, our heads were not in it. We had leads in all three games, but we had no sense of urgency to put that team away. Balls hit the floor, we're not moving our feet out there. We had uncharacteristic mistakes such as 10 missed serves, 12 hitting errors and countless passing mistakes."
Bender said his team should be playing a lot better than its 4-8 record indicates.
"We're very athletic and we've got the height," Bender said. "Three-fourths of the girls can set and the rest of the players have talent, but it's frustrating for me and I see their frustration and I keep preaching we're better than we're showing."
Against DCTC, Trier, Svoboda and Brenna Bogaczyk all had three kills.
Trier and Bogaczyk had service aces, while Svoboda added eight assists and two blocks. The freshman Bogaczyk also had a block.
The Lady Samsons will host Northland International University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. NIU is a four-year school.
