IRONWOOD - High school students at Luther L. Wright School in Ironwood did their best chef impressions during the Homecoming Week cook-off competition on Tuesday night.
Teacher Cheryl Jacisin organized the event, giving students instructions on what items they would be preparing for three judges.
Students prepared elk this year, something different from other meals they have made before. Other mandatory ingredients included either Asian pears or apples, potatoes or rice, carrots or beans and honey. Other items were found in the "pantry," and students had to bring their own seasonings.
According to Jacisin, the event was similar to the popular show "Chopped," where contestants receive a basket full of ingredients and have to make a meal.
Three grades - sophomores, freshman and seniors - competed in the cook-off and received points towards their overall Homecoming score.
Each presented a different cooking style with the elk being marinated in different sauces. The apples or pears were often served as dessert, with vegetables and rice or potatoes as sides.
"The kids did a great job," Jacisin said.
Homecoming Week lasts until Friday, ending with a varsity football game in Ironwood against L'Anse at 6 p.m.
