WAUSAU, Wis. - Joseph A. "Buddy" Komaromy, 87, of Ironwood, Mich., died peacefully Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, with his sons by his side, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau.
He was born Feb. 21, 1927, in Bayfield County, son of the late Alexander and Mary (Kulscar) Komaromy. He moved to Ironwood in 1939, where he lived most of his life, and graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in 1945.
He entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 9, 1946, serving in the Army of Occupation in Japan, and was honorably discharged as a technician fourth grade on Feb. 17, 1947. Following his discharge, Joe returned to Ironwood where he was employed at Gogebic Auto for 32 years. He also worked at the Amoco station in Ironwood and was employed as an equipment operator for the City of Ironwood, retiring in 1999.
Joe was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, where he sang in the Men's Choir and the Resurrection Choir. He was also a member of the former St. Michael's Catholic Church and the church choir in Ironwood and served as custodian there for 32 years. He was currently a member of Ironwood Knights of Columbus Council 1396, the Ironwood Booster Club, Theater Preservation Club and American Legion Post 5, and was former president of the Newport School PTO for several years. An avid guitarist, Joe played and sang with the Ranch Boys and entertained at area nursing homes over the years.
On June 9, 1951, he was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Levandoski at St. Michael's Catholic Church by the late Rev. Frank Ronkowski. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Joseph (Kathy) and John (Catherine), both of Algonquin, Ill .; a daughter, Mary (Tony) Pavlovich, Chanhassen, Minn .; six grandchildren, Scott (Lindsey) Komaromy, Allison (Zach) Norman, Kristin (Kyle) Rybarczyk, Daniel and Jeff Pavlovich, and Tim Komaromy; three great-grandchildren, Jackson, McKinley and Reagan; a brother-in-law, Roman Levandoski, San Antonio, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by three sisters, Marion Doleys, Irma Scott and Rose Newman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Robb Jurkovich, celebrant.
Rite of Committal and interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, where full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.
Luncheon will be served in the parish hall immediately upon return from the cemetery.
Visitation will be in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, where members of Pere Menard Assembly No. 471, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, will serve as honor guard.
Pallbearers will be Scott and Tim Komaromy and Tony and Jeff Pavlovich.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 108 S. Marquette St., Ironwood, MI 49938.
