Michigan Press Association's 2014 Better Newspaper Contest winners

IRONWOOD - Two members of the Daily Globe staff won awards in the Michigan Press Association's 2014 Better Newspaper Contest.

Staff writer Cortney Ofstad and sports editor Jason Juno both took third place in awards announced earlier this week.

Ofstad took third place among 29 entries in the Local Columnist competition.

A judge called her writing "easy to relate to and well written." Ofstad writes a weekly human interest column published on Saturdays. Her entry consisted of three columns published during the term of the contest - April 2013 through March 2014.

Juno was honored for a sports photo of a high school cross-country meet published Aug. 30, 2013. The photo shows runners, including Ironwood's Colin Clausen, running through deep mud and standing water during a race in Ashland, Wis. The judge praised Juno for braving the mud and splash to get the shot. "Way to get the dirty of it," he said. There were 46 entries.

The Daily Globe competed against other daily newspapers across the state with circulations under 15,000.
