Beautification of Ironwood takes a hit

To the Editor:

The other day I was shaking my head in dismay when I read an article in the Daily Globe about the destruction of one of the women’s bathrooms at Depot Park in Ironwood. After all the hard work that has been put into beautifying and improving this fair city for its citizens and visitors, it made me wonder why someone could be so shortsighted.

In the 1960s, Lady Bird Johnson set out on a mission for the beautification of America. Johnson was a lifelong advocate for beautifying the nation’s cities and highways. “Where flowers bloom, so does hope,” was a common theme. At one point, Lady Bird declared Ironwood one of the Flower Box Capitals of America because the streets were neat, clean and beautiful, lined with flower boxes which indicated a strong sense of pride in our community.

Since that time, local government and concerned citizens have worked hard to keep this wonderful small town on the map in the Upper Peninsula, making improvements so not only visitors but citizens of the community can enjoy this place.

When improvements are made, such as the Miners Mural and Depot Park, this is done to promote business in our community and to impart the sense of pride for its citizens. So I may ask, why destroy this with senseless acts?
