Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Taste of Italy fundraiser provides student scholarships

HURLEY - People looking to help local high school seniors and enjoy an Italian meal had a chance to do just that at a luncheon hosted by the Gogebic and Iron County Paisano Club on Saturday.

Around 30 people visited the Hurley Senior Center for a lunch of Italian sausage, polenta, Italian sauerkraut a beverage and desert.

A 50/50 raffle was also held, as was a drawing for donated door prizes.

Dorothy Walesewicz, who shares the club's title of president with her husband, Joe, said it was the first time they've held a luncheon fundraiser like the one they had Saturday.

"Whenever we have a dinner, we have a dinner three times a year, we also have a fundraiser, but this is our first time with this kind of fundraiser, and I'm pleased," she said. "I'm very pleased with the acceptance."

Walesewicz said all of the money raised goes into the club's scholarship fund to provide financial assistance for five lucky seniors from each school in the area.

"They're each $200," she said of the scholarships, "so we give out about $1,000."

Walesewicz said not much has changed with the Paisano Club over its 48-year existence.

"We are still on the same path that the original Paisano organization was established for," she said, which was to provide scholarships. "That's our number one thing."
