IRONWOOD — Students, faculty, staff and area residents attended the annual Veterans Day program at Luther L. Wright School in Ironwood on Wednesday.
The program, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was delayed because of a snowstorm causing school to be canceled.
Members of the JROTC program in Ironwood organized the event, which included a parade of organizations, recognition of guests, a roll call of comrades and pass-in review.
Students in the high school band and choir performed patriotic-themed pieces. “Taps” was performed by high schoolers Brent Matson and Jordan Giannunzio.
Lt. Col. William Azbill was the keynote speaker. He highlighted different moments in American history, including quotes from presidents Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and John F. Kennedy.
“John F. Kennedy once said, ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country,’” Azbill said. “Every veteran has met that challenge. ... They are the defenders of freedom.”
Azbill said the price of freedom is “eternally vigilant.”
“Ordinary Americans were called to do extraordinary acts, protecting our freedom,” Azbill said. “We thank you.”
