WAKEFIELD - It was business as usual Monday night at the city council meeting in Wakefield. A few quick agenda items and an update from the Wakefield Fire Department filled the relatively short meeting.
The Fire Department reported to the council their purchase of three new items of equipment. A $4,000 grant came through for the purchase of a new saw, which the department now has one in each truck.
With last year's ice fishing contest money that the department hosts, they were able to purchase an auto crib, which helps stabilize a vehicle as well as new mini cutters that are able to get in and cut in smaller areas such under seats and for things like the break pedal and steering wheel. The Fire Department will be hosting their ice fishing contest again this year on Feb. 14.
City Manager Margot Anderson addressed briefly the snow crisis of the last two weeks and the city's handling it as an emergency. The city had many complaints come through about the snow and plowing issues, mainly of snow being pushed into driveways by the grader.
"In most cases we have been able to address positively each person's complaint," Anderson reported.
The city handled the snow crisis extremely well and now in the wake of all the hard work their long-term concern at this point is budget and how to keep up efforts for the rest of the winter season.
Anderson reported that the city is also tracking time differently this year in hopes of taking advantage of emergency funds through the state. "I think the better record keeping will put us in a better position and give us a clearer picture of what we are spending and how."
A few other highlights of the meeting were that the city Christmas tree will be set up and displayed right outside the new city hall building. Also the council discussed moving forward with a voluntary recycling program in Wakefield through GRSWMA before putting a more permanent plan in place.
The next Wakefield city council meeting will be held Monday, Dec. 8 in the new city hall building.
