Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
IRONWOOD - Lake Superior continued to blanket the Gogebic Range on Thanksgiving, as the new November snowfall record grew.
The 9.6 inches of lake-effect snow that fell through 7 a.m. Thursday brought the November total to 87.9 inches and the seasonal mark to 89.9 inches. It snowed heavily after 7 a.m. Thursday, sending Ironwood closer to the 100-inch total for autumn.
The stuff that fell Thursday was fluffy and light, unlike the sticky snow that arrived earlier in the month.
The 9.6 inches melted to just .35 inch of precipitation, according to the National Weather Service.
Around turkey dinner time, the sun popped out on the Range and colder temperatures followed, dropping near zero.
The November record snowfall for the past 110 years actually fell on Wednesday, when .8 inch was recorded at Ironwood to eclipse the mark of 78.2 inches set in 1989.
There was no shortage of snow for today's ski opener at Indianhead Mountain, near Wakefield, where 12 inches fell in the past 24 hours and 123 inches had been measured through Thursday.
The ski hill was to be open this weekend and also Dec. 5-7.
It will open on a daily basis on Dec. 12.
Winter officially begins on Dec. 21.
