Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
SAXON, Wis. - Nearly 200 people dined on roast beef and all the fixings during a benefit dinner and gun raffle for the Saxon-Gurney Fire Department on Sunday afternoon.
According to department members, 189 meals were served during the annual dinner, filling the Saxon Community Center.
The meal started around 15 years ago, first as a spaghetti meal, then steak and for the last few years, roast beef.
Throughout the meal, attendees dined on roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, bread and dessert, and visited with friends and family.
Door prizes were given out, and the department also raffled off a Henry 22 LR Rifle and a Henry 44 Mag Rifle and other prizes. A 50/50 raffle also took place.
The proceeds from the event benefit the Saxon-Gurney Fire Department and Medical First Responders.
"Part of the proceeds are also going to be used to outfit a truck, recently acquired from Enbridge Pipeline," chief Stacy Ofstad said. "It is being turned into a brush/rescue truck for the department."
Ofstad said he and the department members were "very thankful" for the community support.
"We can't say enough," Ofstad said. "Thanks to everyone for their continued support throughout the year. We really appreciate it."
