WAKEFIELD - The ice of Sunday Lake will hopefully fill with fishermen Saturday for the sixth annual Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department fishing contest, weather permitting.
The contest will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with prizes offered for pike-sucker and panfish divisions. There are also walleyes in the lake.
With a high of minus-2 predicted, the contest could be moved to Sunday in the event of particularly inclement weather.
It's Free Fishing Weekend in Michigan, so residents and non-residents, including those from neighboring Wisconsin, can get out and fish without a license. Anglers are responsible for following all size rules and bag limit regulations, however.
Contest headquarters will be the Wakefield Veterans of Foreign Wars building on Sunday Lake.
The first fish caught wins a prize, as does the smallest fish registered.
Live bait will be available.
All funds raised through food sales and raffles go toward buying fire suppression equipment.
