Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
ONTONAGON - Officials at the Ontonagon Country Animal Protection shelter held a "thank you" celebration on March 17 for a dedicated group of student volunteers from the Ontonagon Area Schools Senior Service Project class.
The Senior Service Project is a required class for students planning to graduate from Ontonagon in May. Students are expected to find and maintain a community or school project to meet this requirement. The variety and length of the projects vary widely. While there have been many worthy projects accomplished this year, the crew that has been volunteering at OCAP this year has been the busiest group. The OCAP animals are dependent on the volunteers every day.
One non-school volunteer at the shelter said, "We have gotten spoiled by how much they do and don't know what we will do when they graduate."
Other OCAP officials and volunteers at the party shared kind words about the work done by the students at the shelter.
OCAP coordinators Dot Philips and Janet Wolf both said youth involvement in community programs is "critical," and called the collaboration between OCAP and the school a "win-win."
